3trujillo

For the third taco of Christmas, my Trujillo gave to me…

Three fish tacos!!!

You know what goes good with fish tacos? Beef brisket mac ‘n cheese, bros! At least that’s the case at Kelly’s Landing, this funky new joint down by the ACC. Pretty sure this taco trio could probably play on the second line for the Leafs, or something…

GRAND REOPENING: Tacos! Tacos! Tacos! @ Rabbit! Rabbit! Rabbit!

You KNOW this is body by tacos, bro! So when we found this funky new joint serving up Tex-Mex style tacos on King Street called Rabbit! Rabbit! Rabbit! we totally had to check it out. We’re talking fish tacos, we’re talking brisket…we’re even talking crispy cauliflower. OK, so maybe we might skip that one.

rabbit_fish_taco (8)

Now, this wasn’t the biggest or crunchiest fish taco I’ve ever caught, but it was still fairly flavourful, with some pico, cilantro and coleslaw, not to mention the chipotle crema oozing out all over the place… You could put that on a flip-flop, and it would still taste good!

rabbit_chicken_tinga (5)

Chicken tinga also had a nice little crunch from the radish and pickled onions, along with a little cotija cheese on top. This one also had a bit of a kick, but was not too spicy for this gringo… Let’s just say I chased it away with a couple pints of their house Rabbit! Cerveza.

rabbit_brisket_tacos (6)

Now, the smoked brisket tacos were probably the reason I came here. Dude, you definitely don’t see brisket tacos every day in Toronto, bro! They kinda buried the brisket in salsa verde and donkey sauce, but I think I found a way to kick things up a notch…

rabbit_brisket_tater_tots (4)

You KNOW I’m all about the meat ‘n potatoes, bro! So I ordered a side of tater tots, and then stuck a few of ’em on top. Man, the crunch from the tots reminded me of some of the breakfast tacos I had in Austin… Too bad the brisket was nothing compared to Franklin’s, though!

rabbit_tres_leches (10)

But even after slammin’ a fistful of tacos, you KNOW we’ve still got room for dessert. We’re talking tres leches, topped with toasted coconut and candied pineapple, for a little extra kick. Cake was nice ‘n moist, not too sweet, and there was plenty of pineapple to go around — you could put it on a pizza, and it would still taste good!!! 😛

TORONTO’S TOP TAKEOUT: Cinco de Mayo Tacos from Pico de Gallo

Now we’re getting to that weird part of the year where, thanks to COVID, we’ve started celebrating holidays under lockdown for the second time. Not that we really celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Toronto — kinda like how St. Patrick’s Day isn’t much more than an excuse to day drink, Cinco de Mayo is pretty much just a reason to eat tacos. Lots and lots of tacos, bro! So when I saw this funky little joint called Pico de Gallo all over Instagram with their Combo for 2, you KNOW I had to check it out…even if there’s only one of me.

What we’ve got here is your choice of five tacos, either a burrito or a torta, and chips with guacamole, all for 40 bucks. Or, what we call a light lunch in Flavourtown. Now, let’s break it down…

chicken_adobo_taco (6)

La fiesta empieza with a chicken adobo taco. I know this looks like it’s about 50% lettuce, but once you get down to the meat, it’s pretty tasty.

baja_fish_taco (9)

Now, I was gonna get one taco of every different animal on the menu, except that they messed up my order a bit. More on that later. For now, feast your eyes on one of the Top Five fish tacos I’ve ever had, bro! Fish was light and flaky, with a nice crunchy batter, and the pour-your-own donkey sauce really kicked it up a notch!!!

grilled_shrimp_taco (10)

We’re staying under the sea with a grilled shrimp taco, topped with coriander, peppers and a spicy, smoky salsa. Now, they put four sauce containers on the platter, each one next to a taco, so I figured those were the sauces they were supposed to go with. But man, I probably shouldda tasted this one before pouring the whole thing onto the shrimp. This sauce was so hot, I needed several sips of Honey Habanero beer to cool it down!!!

honey_habanero_ale (5)

Picked this bad boy up from The Beer Store especially for this occasion. Now, I’ve already had a couple habanero beers south of the border in 2019, and one of them was like the spiciest thing I’ve ever drank. So I was expecting at least a little heat from this beer…and I didn’t get any. I didn’t really taste the honey, either. I mean, it was still a nice, light, crushable brew, but if you don’t taste the two things on the label, then I dunno, bro. Maybe I’ll try another can without any spicy Mexican food to see if it tastes any different.

UPDATE: OK, there is definitely more habanero heat when you don’t drink this with spicy Mexican food. Still not as overpowering as the Mango Habanero Oberon, but I am definitely feeling the bern right now…

beef_tongue_taco (6)

But now we’re back on the taco attack, with the best beef tongue taco I’ve ever had, bro! For me, good lengua should taste like the well-done beef at the edge of a prime rib roast, and this tongue was totally on point. Plus, the salsa I dumped on top wasn’t nearly as spicy as the last one…

beef_brisket_taco (8)

Now, here’s where Pico de Gallo dun goofed. I asked for a Taco Al Pastor in my order, but instead of sweet ‘n spicy pork with pineapple, I got a beef brisket taco instead. I dunno if they were sold out, or if they got mixed up cuz I had also ordered a beef brisket burrito, but that’s the breaks, little man.

Adding to my disappointment, this taco was not very good. The brisket was really dry, and all bunched up in a great big clump. Did it help that I had already eaten four tacos, all the chips with guac, and half a burrito before I even bit into this one? Probably not. But if there’s one taco from this combo that I would avoid ordering next time — even by accident — it would definitely be the brisket.

beef_brisket_burrito (22)

Speaking of brisket, this burrito suffered from the same predicament as its taco bro. Meat was really dry, but at least the rice, cheese and chipotle donkey sauce made for a bit of a better bite. Of course, I still ate it all…but I kinda wished I had gone for a Burrito Al Pastor instead!!!!

HEATED PATIO EATS: Eating all the tacos @ Chula Taberna

Now, even though it wasn’t supposed to warm up until Wednesday, Taco Wednesday is sooo NOT a thing, so we headed out on Tuesday to Chula Taberna, this funky Mexican fusion joint in the east end, where they’ve got a heated, tented, two-level backyard patio…and lemme tell ya, the place was packed!

This taberna is serving up five different types of tacos, so you KNOW I had to try them all — but first, we’re starting off with some Mexican street corn.

chula_mexican_corn (12)

Dude, this dish is like Elote Gone Loco, bro! You’ve got corn on the cob, topped with queso fresco, pico de gallo, an avacado crema and some cilantro. It’s almost like they put a whole taco on top of this thing!!!

chula_fish_taco (4)

Speaking of tacos, though, we’re diving in first with some crispy fish. You’ve got beer-battered haddock on a house-made tortilla, packed to the gills with guacamole, cilantro, cucumber and cabbage, with some more of that avacado crema on top. Mmm, crema…

chula_brisket_taco (10)

Next up is the BBQ beef brisket. Dude, this is body by BBQ beef brisket! But underneath all those red onions, shaved carrots, corn, cheese and cilantro, I’m almost wondering, where’s the beef, bro???

chula_pork_taco (5)

Taco number three is a personal-go-to — we’re talkin’ pulled pork, son! But they also funk this one up with onion, cabbage, cilantro and then these crunchy, ground-up chicharrones… Dude, you could put those on a flip-flop and it would still taste good!!!!

chula_zucchini_taco (5)

Speaking of crunchy things, up next we’ve got the crispy zucchini taco. Now, the only reason I ordered this one is because I gotta try ’em all, but y’know what, the deep-fried, battered zucchini wasn’t bad. Also, this taco has pretty much the exact same toppings as the Mexican corn, only switching out the crema for an adobo mayo…

chula_chicken_taco (5)

And now we’re saving what was probably the worst for last with the chipotle grilled chicken. Even in better lighting, this taco doesn’t look that great, as it’s just oozing with too much donkey sauce. And the chicken didn’t taste like chipotle, or even grilled, bro. Next time, I think I’ll stick with the zucchini!!!

chula_taberna_churro (9)

Now, even after cramming all those tacos, I totally still had room for dessert, bro! This tasty churro oughtta do’er, though…

PATIO LIT EATS: Cod fish empanadas & truffle tater tots!

Dude, if there’s one thing I like more than comfort food, it’s comfort food that kicks it up a notch. So we’re hanging out on the patio at Canteen, this funky O&B joint at the bottom of the TIFF Lightbox. And they’re all about the comfort food — Caesar salad, tacos, burgers, sliders and pizzas…but when I saw the truffle tater tots, you KNOW I gotta have my tots, bro!!!

truffle_tater_tots (4)

OK, so what makes these truffle tater tots is the truffle aioli dipping sauce — there’s a reason why these are eight bucks, and not 800! But the taters were nice ‘n crispy, and the sauce adds a bit of a kick…I can’t complain at all!

canteen_cod_empanada (3)

But you KNOW that order of tots wasn’t gonna tide me over, so we’re pairing it with a pair of Piri Piri cod empanadas, cabron! These fish pastries were super-flaky, coming in really hot out of the oven. The fish was pulled, and not very spicy — but still pretty tasty!!!

canteen_mac_n_cheese (2)

But the party is just getting started, son! Up next we’ve got mac ‘n cheese, with mushrooms, cured tomatoes and herb bread crumbs. There was supposed to be kale here, too, but friends don’t let friends ruin mac ‘n cheese with kale, bro! You’ve got some nice, big noodles, a creamy cheese sauce, and the mushrooms add a nice bite. I couldda maybe used a little more cheese on top, though…

maison_selby_wit (5)

And we’re washing it all down with a coupla Maison Selby Wit beers, brewed by Big Rock for another O&B joint…but they serve it on tap here, too. Nice, light and refreshing, but not too citrusy — I could slam at least 10 of these!!!

TORONTO’S TOP TAKEOUT: Sushi and tacos and dumplings, oh my!

Now, sometimes deciding what to order for lunch can be tricky. Do I want tacos, or do I want sushi? And how bout a couple dumplings on the side? Well, at The Haam, this funky Japanese inspired Mexican joint on Adelaide, you can get all three with their sushi and taco combo, bro!!!

gochujang_barbacoa_taco (6)

So you KNOW I gotta start off with the taco, son! This gochujang barbacoa piles lots of guac, lettuce, crema, queso and cilatro on top of tasty braised beef inside a hard-shell taco…which got pretty soggy cuz it took an hour to deliver, sadly.

spicy_crunch_salmon (4)

On the sushi side, I settled on a six-pack of Spicy Crunch Salmon rolls. Dude, Spicy Crunch Salmon is the name of my fishing boat, bro!!!

the_haam_beef_gyoza (1)

Now, if you order the sushi and taco combo from DoorDash — and only from DoorDash — they throw in two beef gyoza for free. The only problem was that my DoorDash delivery took so long that these dumps were cold as ice, ice baby! But I gotta say, the flavours from this joint were on point. So I would probably order from them again — only next time, Imma stick with Uber Eats…

4 different deep-fried tacos @ La Carnita

Dude, you KNOW I’d eat anything deep fried, bro! I mean, you could deep-fry a flip-flop, and it would still taste good!!! So we’re hanging out at La Carnita, this funky taco joint on John St, just a few steps from Hooters, where they’re putting not one, not two, not three, but four different fried things in tacos — so you KNOW I had to come check it out!!!

la_carnita_cod_taco (1)

So, we’re starting off with In Cod We Trust, their twisted take on a fish taco. You’ve got crispy cod, topped with pickled cabbage, cilantro, and Voltron sauce, which is like Donkey Sauce Gone Wild, bro!!!!

carnita_fried_chicken_taco (3)

Next up is El Pollo Frito, a fried chicken taco topped with onions, tomato and enough cabbage to choke a chicken… Sadly, the bird isn’t the star of the show here.

la_carnita_shrimp_taco (1)

Now, we’ve got the Baja Shrimp taco, which has the right fried stuff to non-fried stuff ratio with just a bit of lettuce, pickled turnip and some garlic mayo, for that extra kick.

carnita_sweet_potato_taco (4)

But we’re saving the most funkalicious for last with this sweet potato. You’ve got a whole garden in here with deep-fried sweet potaters, topped with black beans, lettuce, corn and jalapenos, and just oozing with crema. This has gotta be the best vegan thing I ate all week, bro!!!!!!

You have a bunch of Good Hombres right here…and they’re making some tasty tacos!!!

So, we’re hanging out at Good Hombres, this funky little taco joint on Bathurst, just a kidney stone’s throw from Toronto Western Hospital. This place is actually attached to a funeral parlour, and it’s a good thing, too…cuz their tacos are to die for, bro!!!!

good_hombres_tacos (2)

Now, ordering less than three tacos is a felony in Flavourtown…so I’m starting off with six. From the top, you’ve got carne asada, some killer carnitas, legit lamb barbacoa, both kinds of seafood tacos — fish AND shrimp — and then this culinary secret weapon, taco alambre. But the party don’t stop there, son!!!!

good_hombres_tacos_round_2 (5)

For Round 2, we’re throwing down chorizo y papas, portobello mushrooms — this was the hottest taco of them all for some reason — and el pollo (loco) asado. I pretty much had one of everything on the menu…except tacos al pastor. They were all outta al pastor — ¡qué horror!

good_hombres_alambre (5)

Now, it’s hard to pick a favourite among so many great tacos, but for this hombre, it’s gotta be alambre. You’ve got beef, you’ve got bacon, bell peppers and melty cheese, topped with cilantro and smothered in chipotle — you could make this taco with a flip-flop, and it would still taste good!!!!

Slaying some shrimp tacos @ Wallace Gastropub

Now, I know what you’re thinking… What would a place with a name like Wallace possibly know about tacos, bro??? And hey, I hear ya. Not gonna lie, I wasn’t so sure myself. But after pulling some core mussels at the Wallace Gastropub last summer, I knew their seafood was pretty legit–so we’re heading back for Taco Wednesdays (yes, Wednesdays), where they’re serving up three fully loaded flour tortillas for just $10.95!!!!

wallace_shrimp_tacos (8)

Now, for that price, you could get chicken or fish, but a legit shrimp taco is something you definitely don’t see every day. And lemme tell ya, these babies bring the heat! You’ve got some mixed greens, cilantro, cheese and add-your-own guac, but man, it’s all about the shrimp, son! These big ‘n meaty sea creatures are served up in a sneaky spicy chipotle sauce that’ll make you order another beer or two. Good thing they’ve got some pretty decent craft beers on tap…

black_raspberry_thunder_IPA (10)

Speaking of things you don’t see every day, this Muskoka Black Raspberry Thunder IPA combines the tarty sweetness of raspberries with the slight hoppiness of a not-too-bitter pale ale. And at $7.50 a pint, you can probably drink enough of these that you’re totally taking the TTC home, bro!!!!

Beef tacos two ways @ Grand Electric

So, we’re hanging out at Grand Electric, this funky little taco joint deep in the heart of Parkdale. Man, this place has everything: fish tacos, shrimp tacos, chicken tacos, carnitas tacos…even cauliflower tacos, for some strange reason. But when I saw they were serving up not one, but two types of beef tacos, I was all like “Uno dos tres, quatro cinco, cinco seis,” white guy!

beef_cheek_tacos (11)

So, we’re starting off with the beef cheek, piled with onions, cilantro and a spicy serrano chile salsa. Dude, these tacos are loco en la cabeza, homes! Maybe not as loco as la cabeza at Seven Lives, but there’s no shame in being the second-best beef cheek taco in this city, right?

short_rib_tacos (13)

But then they kick it up a notch with la costilla, beef short rib tacos. The meat is perfectly cubed, with a nice tenderness, and you’ve got pretty much the same toppings, cept I added some chipotle sauce to this one cuz dude, I would eat that off a sombrero, bro!!!
