Would you drive two and a half hours on a Wednesday just to eat tacos, bro? Well, that’s what we did last year, when we headed out to Taco Farm, this funky little joint in Waterloo, where they’re serving up all you can eat tacos on Wednesdays. They don’t call ’em Waddle Out Wednesdays for nothing–after scarfing down at least 17 tacos, I barely made it outta there alive!!!
So, we’re hanging out at El Trompo, this real-deal Mexican taco joint in Kensington Market. This place is known for its authentic south of the border food, as well as its horribly outdated, Flash-based website. Now, the fish tacos are pretty legit, and the queso fundido is outta bounds bro, but the al pastor is where it’s at. They serve ’em up Dee Efe style with pineapple, coriander and onion, and some lime on the side. Five to an order will only cost ya 10 bucks, bro!!!
Back in 2013, when they first introduced Doritos Locos Tacos to Canada, I might have gone a little overboard. Y’see, I knew they were only available for a limited time, so I wanted to eat so many at one time that I would never feel like I was missing out if I didn’t ever eat them again. Yes, I did eat all 10 of them. And sure enough, I have not eaten another Doritos Locos Taco to this day.
Now, I’ve had some pretty crazy tacos in my lifetime, but this one might be the most funky of the funky bunch. There’s this little joint called Cluck Clucks, down around St. Lawrence Market, where all they serve is fried chicken ‘n waffles. And last summer, after eating a piece of fried chicken and a waffle, and then a fried chicken and waffle sandwich, I still had room for this crazy culinary creation. They call it a twaco, equal parts waffle and taco, with fried chicken, crispy tortilla strips and an Asian-style dressing. When you scarf down this twaco, a Corona gets its lime, bro!!!!
Now, back when I used to live in the east end, there was a certain stretch of Queen St that you wanted to avoid, on the other side of the tracks from Degrassi St up to about Pape. There used to be a buncha dive bars, pawn shops and greasy-looking diners that you didn’t wanna mess around in…but that area’s pretty nice now. I mean, you’ve got cozy little pubs like the Brooklyn Tavern, at Queen and Brooklyn, and a few killer Mexican joints, like Barrio Cerveceria, where they’re serving up seven different kinds of tacos at $5-$6 a pop.
Now, I don’t always eat vegan food, but when I do, it’s gotta be so far outta bounds that a search party can’t find it. Like this south-of-the-border classic from the renegades of funk at Tacos 101, the nopal taco. They take grilled cactus, chop it up like crunchy green beans, and add layers of beans, cheese, tomatoes and onions. Pretty sure I could slam seven of these, son!!!
We all know that Tuesday is the national day for tacos, bro! And it turns out there’s this funky fast food joint down by the ballpark that’s serving up three tacos for $6.50 on this righteous day of the week. They’ve got chicken, they’ve got steak, they’ve even got a fish stick taco…but trust me, you wanna get the carnitas times three.
Can we have tacos for breakfast, mommy dear, mommy dear? Ya gotta have ’em in Texas–cuz that’s where they’re super legit, bro! Seriously, just about every Mexican joint in Austin is open in the morning, serving up tacos with some variation of egg, meat and cheese. And at The Original Tamale House, in East Austin, you can even come up with your own funky, flavourlicious creations. Let’s just say I made a few…
OK, so actually it’s a Pepsi, cuz they don’t have Coke at Taco Bell. But man, when they rolled out those Naked Chicken Chalupas back in March, you KNOW I went all out, bro! Basically, it’s a Taco Bell taco with a fried chicken shell from the KFC next door. I can only imagine what flavour combination they might come up with next–can you say Doritos Locos Popcorn Chicken Poutine Supreme, bro????
You know what goes good with fish tacos? Beef brisket mac ‘n cheese, bros! At least that’s the case at Kelly’s Landing, this funky new joint down by the ACC. Pretty sure this taco trio could probably play on the second line for the Leafs, or something…
