Pizza for breakfast? Don’t mind if I do, bro!!!

So, the other day we’re hanging out at Constantine, this funky joint inside the Anndore Hotel, just about a block away from the new Chick-fil-A at Yonge and Bloor. But unlike Chick-fil-A, this place serves up a solid spread on Sundays, including this funkalicious brunch dish, the Breakfast Pizza:

OK, now let’s break it down. You’ve got some spicy n’duja sausage, a couple quail eggs and some great green globs of basil pesto on a thin, crunchy crust. Now, I’d say the size of this pizza is about right for breakfast, but I can definitely eat a whole lot more pizza for dinner…

Of course, you can’t have breakfast pizza without breakfast beer, bro! This here’s a Vermont Blond from Burdock, a funky craft brewery in the West End. You’ve got a light, refreshing blonde ale with just a hint of lemon, so you know it’s lemony fresh. I could probably pound a few more of these — hey, it’s 5 o’clock somewhere, Alan Jack-son!!!!

Turkish sausage and egg pizza @ Mr. Pide

Now, I’m all about the pizza – dude, this is body by pizza, bro! And man, I’ve had all kinds of pizza from all over the place…Detroit-style pizza, vegan pizza, even spam and pineapple pizza! But this is not pizza – it’s a pide, bro!

This thin-crust Turkish flatbread is baked like a pizza in a stone oven at Mr. Pide on the Danforth, where they’ve got 20 different kinds to choose from. I went with the Sucuklu Yumurtali, topped with eggs and Turkish sausage…this one doesn’t actually have cheese.

Now, the crust is nice and crispy – I like the flaky end pieces – with a whole lotta eggy goodness, and a nice little kick from the sausage. They actually stuff sausage inside and then put more on top – it’s a Double Sausage Party in Flavourtown! And they come with added veggies like tomatoes, onions and parsley – but who needs veggies when you’ve got so much sausage???

Pizza: It’s not just for breakfast anymore!

So, we’re hanging out at 7 West Cafe, this funky neighbourhood joint on Charles Street, just offa Yonge. This place is open 24/7, 365 days a year, and they’ve been serving up classic comfort food for over 24 years—that’s older than some of my Motley Crue tour shirts, bro!

Now, when you’re open all day and all of the night, you know you’ve gotta do all-day breakfast. And while they’ve got the classics like a breakfast bagel, Denver omelette and two eggs any style, they also funk it up with this cross between omelette and crust…the breakfast pizza:

OK, let’s break it down. You’ve got your ham, you’ve got your mushrooms, you’ve got a whole buncha cheese, and then there’s not one, but two sunny-side-up eggs in the middle. Shut the back door! There is so much stuff on here that it kinda weighs down the crust a bit, but when you get that perfect bite, it’s like breakfast, lunch and dinner—all rolled into one! It comes in personal pan and 10”, but you know I went with the big 10-incher…and I would still have room for dessert, but who eats dessert for breakfast, bro???
