Eating all the tacos @ Añejo

So we’re hanging out at Añejo, this funky Mexican joint on King West. Last time we were here, I went to town on this Mexican meat mountain in Flavourtown, which was soooo outta bounds, bro! But you KNOW we can’t go to a Mexican place and not eat tacos — so that’s why it’s time for another visit.

Now, this place has got about a dozen tacos on the menu, but the fancier ones only come in threes. However, you can get their “Tacos Classico” in any combination of one, three or six — and with six different kinds, that means I’m having one of each.

anejo_barbacoa_taco (3)

Forget about saving the best for last — we’ve having this one first, son!  I’m talking Barbacoa, a super tender pulled beef short rib with crunchy bites of raw jalapeños… I could slam, like, six of these alone!!!

anejo_chicken_tinga_taco (4)

But we’ve moving right along to the Chicken Tinga taco. I usually find chicken tacos to be boring, but this one was a cut above — meat was very tender, although it did not have much of a kick.

anejo_braised_mushrooms_taco (8)

On the other hand, the Braised Mushrooms Taco is both the sauciest and spiciest one so far. Not quite as hot as the mushroom birria at Rosalinda… but I definitely needed a few sips of Michelada after this!!!

anejo_chorizo_taco (6)

The Chorizo Crumble was not too dry or too spicy. Basically, it was like ground beef — except it’s sausage. Oh, and a bunch of of it fell out the back…

anejo_pulled_pork_taco (3)

When it comes to pork tacos, though, I preferred the Pulled Pork. This one gets the job done with a nice little tang, son!!!

anejo_fried_tilapia_taco (6)

Crispy Fried Tilapia was both crispy and flaky. A bit of the house made crema really kicks it up a notch!!!

anejo_churros (4)

But you KNOW we’ve still got room for dessert, bro! Last time, I tried the tarta de chocolate, but now we gotta go for the churros. Hot ‘n crunchy, with a whole buncha powdered sugar, and some chocolate sauce on the side for dipping… There’s nothing wrong with that at all!!!

4 different deep-fried tacos @ La Carnita

Dude, you KNOW I’d eat anything deep fried, bro! I mean, you could deep-fry a flip-flop, and it would still taste good!!! So we’re hanging out at La Carnita, this funky taco joint on John St, just a few steps from Hooters, where they’re putting not one, not two, not three, but four different fried things in tacos — so you KNOW I had to come check it out!!!

la_carnita_cod_taco (1)

So, we’re starting off with In Cod We Trust, their twisted take on a fish taco. You’ve got crispy cod, topped with pickled cabbage, cilantro, and Voltron sauce, which is like Donkey Sauce Gone Wild, bro!!!!

carnita_fried_chicken_taco (3)

Next up is El Pollo Frito, a fried chicken taco topped with onions, tomato and enough cabbage to choke a chicken… Sadly, the bird isn’t the star of the show here.

la_carnita_shrimp_taco (1)

Now, we’ve got the Baja Shrimp taco, which has the right fried stuff to non-fried stuff ratio with just a bit of lettuce, pickled turnip and some garlic mayo, for that extra kick.

carnita_sweet_potato_taco (4)

But we’re saving the most funkalicious for last with this sweet potato. You’ve got a whole garden in here with deep-fried sweet potaters, topped with black beans, lettuce, corn and jalapenos, and just oozing with crema. This has gotta be the best vegan thing I ate all week, bro!!!!!!

You have a bunch of Good Hombres right here…and they’re making some tasty tacos!!!

So, we’re hanging out at Good Hombres, this funky little taco joint on Bathurst, just a kidney stone’s throw from Toronto Western Hospital. This place is actually attached to a funeral parlour, and it’s a good thing, too…cuz their tacos are to die for, bro!!!!

good_hombres_tacos (2)

Now, ordering less than three tacos is a felony in Flavourtown…so I’m starting off with six. From the top, you’ve got carne asada, some killer carnitas, legit lamb barbacoa, both kinds of seafood tacos — fish AND shrimp — and then this culinary secret weapon, taco alambre. But the party don’t stop there, son!!!!

good_hombres_tacos_round_2 (5)

For Round 2, we’re throwing down chorizo y papas, portobello mushrooms — this was the hottest taco of them all for some reason — and el pollo (loco) asado. I pretty much had one of everything on the menu…except tacos al pastor. They were all outta al pastor — ¡qué horror!

good_hombres_alambre (5)

Now, it’s hard to pick a favourite among so many great tacos, but for this hombre, it’s gotta be alambre. You’ve got beef, you’ve got bacon, bell peppers and melty cheese, topped with cilantro and smothered in chipotle — you could make this taco with a flip-flop, and it would still taste good!!!!

Crushing craft beers and feasting on food trucks @ the CNE

Now, you KNOW I love to chow down at the CNE bro–like that one time when I demolished an all-in-one chicken/veal/eggplant parm sammy, and still had room for a chocolate Philly steakclair for dessert. But maybe the best time to go to the Ex is the second last weekend, when they’ve got a food truck frenzy and a craft beer festival, all rolled into one on Princess Street.

deep_fried_cheese_curds (12)

So, I started out by grabbing some deep-fried cheese curds from some Flavourtown royalty at The King of Curds. About the only way you could possibly make poutine better is by deep-frying it, so this is pretty much the best thing ever, bro!!!

whitewater_farmers_daughter (5)

When it comes to the booze, they give you tokens for $2.50 that get you one sippy cup each. Since there were about eight different breweries, I got to try pretty much everything that wasn’t wine or cider. Because why drink wine or cider when you can have a Farmers Daughter Blonde Ale from Whitewater Brewing Co???

big_rock_bellyflop (4)

Now, Big Rock is just about my favourite local craft brewery, and they’re funking it up with the Bellyflop, an apricot grisette that tastes like summer in a glass. Dude, calling this beer a flop is like saying Biodome isn’t the best movie of all time, bro!!!

boshkung_happy_camper (3)

Now, I’m not sure what a Boshkung is, but it totally tastes delicious. This Happy Camper Irish red ale is basically the Billy Elliot of alcoholic beverages, bro!!!

spearhead_hawaiian_ipa (4)

Now, I’ve never been to Hawaii, but I own, like, 17 Hawaiian shirts, so you know I’m all over this Hawaiian Style IPA from Spearhead, son!

captain_crunch_fish_taco (7)

So, after pounding four beers, you know what time it is? Taco Time, bro! This Captain Crunch Fish Taco from Food Dudes comes fully loaded with guacamole, pickled red cabbage, smoked sour cream, hot sauce, scallions, tomatoes and a whole lotta cilantro. No actual Captain Crunch though, but how awesome would that be???

useless_crayon_white_ipa (3)

We’re going back to the beer with probably the best name of the day–Useless Crayon White IPA from Market Brewing. Now, the white crayon might be the most useless in the box, but when it comes to brewskis, I could use a few more of these!

maple_buttertart_ale (2)

Now, that last beer had the best name, but this one here is the funkiest of the bunch. Can you say Maple Buttertart Ale, bro? Sawdust City’s got the maple and the buttery taste all in a glass–whoa-oh-oh it’s magic!!!

muskoka_summerweiss (5)

And finally, we’re ending things on a light, crisp, refreshing note with Muskoka Summerweiss. It’s like the Feel Good Hit of the Summer in Flavourtown, bro!

heartbreak_s'more (5)

But you KNOW that after eight beers, two tacos and a whole buncha cheese curds, we’ve still got room for dessert, bro! So we’re heading into the Food Building for this festival of funk in Flavourtown–the Heartbreak S’More. You’ve got a hot and tender fried chicken breast, topped with toasted marshmallows and graham cracker crumbles, between chocolate-dipped buns, with another marshmallow on top!!!??? Dude, this dish should get an Oscar for Best Fried Chicken in a Supporting Role!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cinco de mayo tacos @ Seven Lives

Happy cinco de mayo, hermanos!!!! With a high of 25 in the city today, it’s the perfect weather to head down to Kensington Market for some real-deal Mexican tacos, bro! Seven Lives is serving it up Tijuana style with eight different tacos packed so full of meat and/or seafood that you need at least two tortillas to even try to contain them:

cabeza_taco (2)

I wish I was in Tijuana, eating barbecue cabeza! This super-tender beef cheek just melts in your mouth, and there’s so much meat here, it’s spilling out the back!

pulpo_taco (3)

Now here’s one you definitely don’t see every day. This pulpo taco was tastier than fiction, with some crisp celery to balance out the thin, chewy chunks of grilled octopus. There was so much food here that the double shell even started to break!!!

taco_gobernador

But you KNOW we gotta save room for the in-house special, El Gobernador. This Governor of Flavourtown pumps you up with smoked blue marlin, juicy shrimp, and, just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, a hidden layer of melty cheese. You know I’ll be back for this one, bro!!!!

Now, I can normally eat five tacos for breakfast, but after scarfing down these three, I think I might only have room for one more…and by the time I get back in line, I might even change my mind! For six bucks a taco, you totally get your money’s worth, bro!!!!

Eating all the tacos @ Tallboys

Man, Taco Tuesday is probably my favourite day of the week-even though we can’t call it that anymore because Taco Time owns the trademark. But that don’t stop me from eating tacos non-stop, bro! So, we’re hanging out at Tallboys, this friendly neighbourhood craft beer joint around Bloor and Ossington, where they’ve got six different tacos on Tuesdays for four bucks a pop.

But man, making me choose between tacos is like asking me to pick my favourite player from the 1989 Calgary Flames. OK, so it’s Lanny McDonald, but you can’t go wrong with any of them. So that’s why I ordered all six:

tallboys_tacos (1)

These tacos have got everything from pork to chicken to fish, beans to mushrooms to chili. But in this case, if I had to pick a favourite, it would hafta be the fish taco:

tallboys_fish_taco (2)

Man, this fish taco is festival of funk in Flavourtown! You’ve got a tasty piece of basa, with a light, yet crispy Steam Whistle beer batter, stuffed inside a corn tortilla with salsa, guac and a nice crunchy slaw. Dude, next time I think I’ll just order six of these…and at least one of everything else!

ASSEMBLY CHEF’S HALL: One pulled lamb, one fish and one beef…

Because I didn’t get enough tacos for Christmas, I headed back to Assembly Chef’s Hall, where they’ve got a funky little joint that’s hand rolling the corn tortillas and grilling up the beef, lamb and fish. At Los Colibris, these tacos go for about seven bucks a pop, but you can’t just expect me to eat one taco, bro!!!

lamb_barbacoa_taco (5)

Man, this lamb barbacoa is so far outta bounds, it ended up on the other side of the wall!!! It’s like what you get when you cross roast lamb with pulled pork–a total taste sensation! Pretty sure I could slam, like, seven of these…but then I wouldn’t be able to sample the other tasty taco offerings:

beef_alambre_taco (4)

This beef alambre is giving me hambre, hombre! You’ve got the tender grilled beef, with bell peppers, onions, cilantro and salsa that’s practically baked into the shell. Man, this taco is totally messy, and you KNOW if it ain’t messy, it ain’t tasty, bro!!!!

baja_fish_taco (2)

This baja fish taco is about to swim straight down my piehole! You’ve got a crispy battered fish with a nice, crunchy slaw–and then I dumped a whole buncha chipotle sauce on top. Cuz I’m in love with chipotle, bro!!!

12 TACOS OF CHRISTMAS: Three fish tacos

3trujillo

For the third taco of Christmas, my Trujillo gave to me…

kelly's_fish_tacos (2)

Three fish tacos!!!

You know what goes good with fish tacos? Beef brisket mac ‘n cheese, bros! At least that’s the case at Kelly’s Landing, this funky new joint down by the ACC. Pretty sure this taco trio could probably play on the second line for the Leafs, or something…

READ MORE: It’s a beef brisket mac ‘n cheese bodycheck, bro!!!!

It’s a beef brisket mac ‘n cheese bodycheck, bro!!!!

So, we’re hanging out at Kelly’s Landing, this funky new upscale pub ‘n grub just a Bashin’ Bill Barilko slapshot away from the Scotiabank ACC. This place used to be a Casey’s, but they’ve kicked it up a notch in every way imaginable. They’ve even put in a big-screen so you can watch the game, if you don’t feel like showing up on time!

And the menu’s pretty classy too, with lobster fettuccine, sustainable salmon and some righteous greens (literally, it says “righteous greens” on the menu, bro!) But when I saw they were putting 14-hour smoked brisket on top of mac ‘n cheese, I knew where this dish was landing…straight down my piehole, bro!!!!

brisket_mac_n_cheese (7)

OK, let’s break it downskis. The mac attack is baked, not fried, with an aged cheddar crust. The brisket is basically beef jerky texture, and then you’ve got a little green thing as a garnish. They don’t give you very much food for 11 bucks, though. It’s really just a light pre-game snack in Flavourtown, son!

kelly's_fish_tacos (2)

But you KNOW we ain’t done there, bro! This tasty trio of fish tacos comes piled high with a pineapple slaw that’s pretty slawsome. You’ve got some mixed greens, avocado mayo and cheddar cheese, with some smoked chili sauce on the side for an extra kick. It’s like a first-line powerplay goal in the Flavourtown Cup Playoffs, bro!

kelly's_fish_tacos (7)

And these ain’t no tiny little 10-dollar tacos either, Curtis Broseph! You almost need to keep both hands on the stick to throw this one roof-daddy! They might be a little too heavy on the slaw, though. I might wanna get that on the side next time…

These are the tacos in my neighbourhood…

You know me, this is body by tacos, bro! I’m pretty sure you could make a taco out of a flip-flop, and I’d still eat it. So when I heard there’s this funky neighbourhood joint serving up seven funky-fresh flavours, you know I had to try at least four of them. This is the Barrio on Queen Dream Team, dude!

pollo_adobado_taco (4)

Up first, we’ve got the pollo adobado, which is like a pollo loco, but with a better lawyer. Here’s some marinated grilled chicken, pickled red onions and cilantro heading straight down my piehole, bro!!!

barrio_carnitas_taco (2)

Take it from me, carnitas is my Taco Tuesday go-to, bro! And this place is 2 legit 2 quit, with salsa borracha, pico de gallo and cilantro rounding out the taco!

campechano_taco (2)

You ever get double the meat at Subway and go, “Man, I wish they did that with a taco?” Well, your prayers have been answered–say hello to mi amigo campechano! This super-delish dish combines steak and chorizo for a double down in Flavourtown!!!!

barrio_fish_taco (3)

And finally, we’ve got el pescado–the dopest fish in the sea. This one comes battered and fried with chipotle mayo and Mexican coleslaw–I don’t know what that is, but I’d still put it on a flip-flop!!!!
