TORONTO’S TOP TAKEOUT: This smoked duck sushi burrito is a Flavourtown fusion three-way!!!

Dude, I can’t even remember the last time I used Ritual — probably sometime before the pandemic started. But for a limited time, they are taking 50% off your first order at certain restaurants, up to $10, which is perfect for lunchtime. And since it’s warm outside now, I figured I might as well take advantage of one of the few things we’re actually allowed to leave the house for and pick up some takeout instead of having it delivered to me for a change.

So, there’s this funky little joint called Mi’hito Sushi Laboratory serving up Japanese/Mexican fusion from four locations across Toronto and Mississauga. This place has got everything: sushi tacos, sushi burritos, poke bowls and so many rolls to choose from. But when I saw the Spicy Samurai Duck burrito, I was all over that like duck on rice, bro!!!

OK, now let’s break it down. What we’ve got here is smoked duck breast, served cold, with a mix of cabbage, red pepper, seaweed, mandarin orange and a cucumber dill dressing leaking out all over the place. This thing was super messy, bro! I don’t think I’ve ever had duck served cold before, but you still got a nice, rich, meaty texture. But this is a situation where all the meat is on one side, and the veggies are on the other, so you gotta take two bites before you chew, son!!!

Of course, you KNOW I couldn’t get Japanese/Mexican takeout and NOT order a fried chicken taco, bro! This chicken is super-crunchy, karaage-style, but also seems to be served cold, with lettuce, cabbage, corn, edamame, green onions, and one lonely piece of avocado hanging out the end. Now, this wouldn’t be the best fried chicken taco I’ve ever had, but at 50% off, it only cost me like 2 bucks, and I can go for that…

4 different deep-fried tacos @ La Carnita

Dude, you KNOW I’d eat anything deep fried, bro! I mean, you could deep-fry a flip-flop, and it would still taste good!!! So we’re hanging out at La Carnita, this funky taco joint on John St, just a few steps from Hooters, where they’re putting not one, not two, not three, but four different fried things in tacos — so you KNOW I had to come check it out!!!

la_carnita_cod_taco (1)

So, we’re starting off with In Cod We Trust, their twisted take on a fish taco. You’ve got crispy cod, topped with pickled cabbage, cilantro, and Voltron sauce, which is like Donkey Sauce Gone Wild, bro!!!!

Next up is El Pollo Frito, a fried chicken taco topped with onions, tomato and enough cabbage to choke a chicken… Sadly, the bird isn’t the star of the show here.

la_carnita_shrimp_taco (1)

Now, we’ve got the Baja Shrimp taco, which has the right fried stuff to non-fried stuff ratio with just a bit of lettuce, pickled turnip and some garlic mayo, for that extra kick.

carnita_sweet_potato_taco (4)

But we’re saving the most funkalicious for last with this sweet potato. You’ve got a whole garden in here with deep-fried sweet potaters, topped with black beans, lettuce, corn and jalapenos, and just oozing with crema. This has gotta be the best vegan thing I ate all week, bro!!!!!!

Fried chicken taco + surf ‘n turf fries @ Panamerican Food Festival

So, we’re hanging out at the Panamerican Food & Music Festival, this funky little fiesta at Yonge Dundas Square. Now, in a place like this, you know there’s gonna be a ton of tacos, but I was looking for the funkiest, chunkiest taco I could get my hands on…and I think I found it:

korean_chicken_taco (4)

This Korean fried chicken taco from the funky bunch at GOGI packs a whole stick of chicken with a tangy sauce in with kimchi, lettuce, scallions and a little crema, for that extra creaminess. Now, you can bite the chicken right off the stick, until you get to the middle, then it gets a little messy. But hey, if it ain’t messy, it ain’t tasty, bro!!!

mar_tierra_fries (5)

Of course, you KNOW I can’t eat just one taco, bro! So I stopped off next door for some Mar & Tierra (Sea & Earth) Fries from El Trompo Movil. This is like Mexican Poutine Gone Wild! The fries are hot ‘n crispy, you’ve got that south-of-the-border flavour with the crema ‘n guac, shrimp are cooked perfectly, and then there’s these small pieces of steak scattered around, along with little balls of shredded cheese. Probably one of the most outta-bounds versions of poutine I’ve ever had — all that’s missing is some killer queso fundido on top!!!

watermelon_smoothie (7)

Now, they don’t actually serve beer at this festival, so I had to settle for a watermelon smoothie…straight from the melon! Dude, this is like the most fruit I’ve had all month!!!

panam_fest_churro (7)

But even after all that funky food and drink, you KNOW I’ve still got room for a churro, bro! Dude, there’s always room for churros!!!

12 TACOS OF CHRISTMAS: Fried chicken ‘n waffle taco

A fried chicken ‘n waffle taco!

Now, I’ve had some pretty crazy tacos in my lifetime, but this one might be the most funky of the funky bunch. There’s this little joint called Cluck Clucks, down around St. Lawrence Market, where all they serve is fried chicken ‘n waffles. And last summer, after eating a piece of fried chicken and a waffle, and then a fried chicken and waffle sandwich, I still had room for this crazy culinary creation. They call it a twaco, equal parts waffle and taco, with fried chicken, crispy tortilla strips and an Asian-style dressing. When you scarf down this twaco, a Corona gets its lime, bro!!!!

12 TACOS OF CHRISTMAS: Four fried chicken tacos and a Coke

For the fourth taco of Christmas, my Trujillo gave to me…

Four fried chicken tacos and a Coke!

OK, so actually it’s a Pepsi, cuz they don’t have Coke at Taco Bell. But man, when they rolled out those Naked Chicken Chalupas back in March, you KNOW I went all out, bro! Basically, it’s a Taco Bell taco with a fried chicken shell from the KFC next door. I can only imagine what flavour combination they might come up with next–can you say Doritos Locos Popcorn Chicken Poutine Supreme, bro????
