I just ordered this grilled cheese sandwich in French!

It’s official: the French word for grilled cheese is grilled cheese. This is according to the OLQF, the keeper of the language in Quebec. To celebrate this occasion, instead of ordering up un sandwich au fromage fondu, I headed down to MELTwich for a grilled cheese avec bacon:

OK, let’s break it down. The bread is nice and toasty, the cheese is ooey-gooey kablooey, and, if there’s one complaint, it’s that there’s probably not enough bacon. On the plus side, at least I wasn’t in violation of any language laws. It turns out that the French word for bacon was already bacon!

The food at Brewhaha ain’t no laughing matter!

So, we’re hanging out at Brewhaha, this cozy neighbourhood basement bar on Prince Arthur Ave, just a stone’s throw from St. George subway station. Basically, they took the downstairs of a Duke of York and made it a bit cozier, with a buncha local craft beers on tap…like this here 8th Sin Black Lager:

This Hop City brew is halfway between a lager and a stout, with a chocolately, coffee taste, but a light, easy-drinking finish. It’s like when you’ve had Guinness for breakfast and lunch, and want something else for dinner…try an 8th Sin Black Lager!

Now, this was the dish that brought me in the door—the Cheesy Weiny Mac ‘n Dreamy. You’ve got mac ‘n cheese, deep-fried weiners, and then some crispy onions on top, for that one serving of vegetables. The hot dogs are real hot, straight outta the fryer, but the mac is not super cheesy, and does not have much bite. Still, I’ve put worse things in my mouth for $7.99 before…

Which brings us to the parmesan crusted grilled cheese. Could you tell from looking at it that there was parmesan in the crust? Me neither, even after tasting it. There’s also bacon in here, and some clumpy tomatoes…that kinda overpower everything else. And that’s without mentioning the bowl of lukewarm tomato sauce on the side! They also say this dish comes with ketchup chips, but these tasted more like plain or maybe BBQ to me…

Bottom line with this place is that the price might be right, but the food is wrong, bro!

FRONT STREET FOODS: Grilled cheese tastes better when you just add bacon!

So today, the weather was pretty shitty around lunch time. Y’know, it was all cloudy ‘n rainy ‘n shit. Today was not a day to be eating ice cream—but a pretty decent day for a grilled cheese sandwich:

OK, let’s break it down. The bread is grilled perfectly, nice and crispy. You’ve got lotsa ooey, gooey, local white cheddar oozing all over the place…but the bacon is what makes it. Nice and thick, but still with a nice chew. All that’s missing is the tomato soup!

Food Truck Feeding Frenzy Friday: Hmm, wonder if I could eat 10 of these…

(Originally written January 16, 2014)

Now this is the kind of food-truck experience I’d been expecting after seeing several episodes of Eat St.  Quirky characters, friendly service and food that someone surely cooked up in their college dorm—in this case, a grilled-cheese sandwich.

Let’s just say this wasn’t your grand-dad’s grilled cheese, with both Doritos and jalapenos inside.  The crunch of the chips hit me right away, with the processed cheese double-teaming my mouth alongside real cheddar.  The jalapeno peppers added a nice sweet kick, making this the equivalent of a nacho sandwich.  Could use more than one napkin though, as things get quite greasy!
