PATIO LIT EATS: Mac ‘n cheese poutine, pulled pork grilled cheese, total cheesefest!!!

York Region started reopening a few days before Toronto, so they’ve had a little more time to get their patio scene up and running. That’s why we’re headed up to Unionville to check out a funky little joint that’s been voted best patio in town 16 years running — this is Jake’s on Main.

And, when looking at their menu of funkalicious pub grub, I couldn’t decide between the mac ‘n cheese poutine and the BBQ pulled pork grilled cheese…so I just ordered both!

Now, I did make mac ‘n cheese nachos before, in one of my drunken stupors, but I never would have thought to put the mac on top of poutine. So I gotta give my brother Jake his props — this dish was freaky, deeky, eat-it-any-day-of-the-weeky! Noodles are cooked perfectly, with a nice creaminess, and then that extra layer of cheese from the poutine really kicks it up a notch!

OK, so maybe it’s not a proper poutine — there’s no gravy, or Quebec cheese curds here — but I don’t really think gravy would make this dish taste better. Now, if you poured some queso on me, that’s a whole nother ballgame, bro!!!!

And then, I was hoping that this festival of funk in Flavourtown would continue onto the grilled cheese sammy, but as you can probably see, it wasn’t equal parts cheesy and porky — more like a pulled pork sandwich with a slice of cheddar on top. And the pork wasn’t bad, or anything, but it just didn’t quite knock it outta the park. Maybe I’ll just hafta order two poutines next time! 😛

Now, you KNOW this blog isn’t Burgers, Bacon and Long Island Iced Tea — so we’re totally slamming some patio beers, bro! And nothing screams patio beer like this Big Tiki Tropical Punch Blonde from the hopheads at Hop City. Packed with passionfruit, pineapple, mango and papaya, it tastes more like fruit punch than beer — and at 4.5%, I can pound these until the sun goes down, son!!!

Killer grilled cheese cheeseburger @Montana’s, of all places…

Now, I don’t usually go to Montana’s, unless it’s like AYCE ribs or AYCE fajitas or something, cuz they’re waaaaaay out in the suburbs and I don’t wanna drive the Camaro on the 401, bro! Turns out they actually are doing AYCE ribs right now, and I was just about to rack ’em up…but then I saw this tasty two-hander in Flavourtown, the Grilled Cheese Cheeseburger:

Man, this sandwich is like two great things rolled into one thing! The patty’s thick and nicely grilled, you’ve got a bed of lettuce between two grilled-cheesy Louise-y buns. There’s supposed to be some bacon in there, and sriracha ketchup, but you don’t really taste it. What you do get is a whole buncha crispy Cajun onion strings. Dude, this is body by crispy Cajun onion strings!!!!

Now, that mighta looked like a pretty big burger to you, but it’s really just another light snack in Flavourtown! Let’s just say, if this joint ever had AYCE burgers, I could probably pound 4-5 of these… Sheeeet son, somebody at Montana’s betta get on that one–if I had my little way, you KNOW I’d eat burgers every day!!!!

(Picture this, but with burgers.)

I just ordered this grilled cheese sandwich in French!

It’s official: the French word for grilled cheese is grilled cheese. This is according to the OLQF, the keeper of the language in Quebec. To celebrate this occasion, instead of ordering up un sandwich au fromage fondu, I headed down to MELTwich for a grilled cheese avec bacon:

OK, let’s break it down. The bread is nice and toasty, the cheese is ooey-gooey kablooey, and, if there’s one complaint, it’s that there’s probably not enough bacon. On the plus side, at least I wasn’t in violation of any language laws. It turns out that the French word for bacon was already bacon!

FRONT STREET FOODS: Grilled cheese tastes better when you just add bacon!

So today, the weather was pretty shitty around lunch time. Y’know, it was all cloudy ‘n rainy ‘n shit. Today was not a day to be eating ice cream—but a pretty decent day for a grilled cheese sandwich:

OK, let’s break it down. The bread is grilled perfectly, nice and crispy. You’ve got lotsa ooey, gooey, local white cheddar oozing all over the place…but the bacon is what makes it. Nice and thick, but still with a nice chew. All that’s missing is the tomato soup!

Food Truck Feeding Frenzy Friday: Hmm, wonder if I could eat 10 of these…

(Originally written January 16, 2014)

Now this is the kind of food-truck experience I’d been expecting after seeing several episodes of Eat St.  Quirky characters, friendly service and food that someone surely cooked up in their college dorm—in this case, a grilled-cheese sandwich.

Let’s just say this wasn’t your grand-dad’s grilled cheese, with both Doritos and jalapenos inside.  The crunch of the chips hit me right away, with the processed cheese double-teaming my mouth alongside real cheddar.  The jalapeno peppers added a nice sweet kick, making this the equivalent of a nacho sandwich.  Could use more than one napkin though, as things get quite greasy!
