PATIO LIT EATS: Detroit style pizza and burgers in Parkdale

Now, with some unseasonably warn weather yesterday, we got to enjoy the last day of (unheated) patio season 10 days into October. We’re hanging out in Parkdale, at this funky joint called Gianna’s Patties and Pies, that opened up during the (first) lockdown over where the Tennessee Tavern used to be. Not gonna lie, I’m gonna miss their AYCE pierogis, but when I heard that this new place was serving up Detroit-style pizza, along with a cheese skirt burger,  then you KNOW I had to check it out, bro!!!

Up first is the Frico Cheeseburger, with its massive fried cheese skirt. You’ve also got tomato, pickles, a couple hot peppers, and then I paid extra to add bacon, cuz the first rule of Flavourtown is Always Add Bacon! This burger was so messy I couldda used more than one napkin, but when you get a bite of that deep-fried cheese, along with the beef, that’s TheBomb.ca, bro!!!

But you KNOW that burger was just a light snack in Flavourtown, son! Up next, we’ve got a 10″ by 14″ Hawaiian pizza, topped with braised ham, fresh pineapple, basil and this wicked awesome sauce imported from Ono Grinds in San Diego. Now, I definitely don’t mind pineapple on pizza, and this was one of, if not, the best ham & pineapple pizzas I’ve ever had. You’ve got nice chunks of meat, the sweetness of the fresh pineapple, plus, since it’s Detroit-style, that ring of burnt cheese around the edges… The cheese is what makes it, bro!!!

Of course, we’re not washing this down this ham and pineapple with a pina colada or nothing like that..

Instead, we’ve got a couple cans of Kizuna, this hazy, Vermont-style IPA from Godspeed. This dry-hopped brew has enough citrusy, hoppy flavour to go good with Hawaiian pizza — or probably any pizza, dude! And at 5.8%, I could definitely crush a few of these before the sun goes down…

Hawaiian Pizza Gone Wild @ The Good Son!

Now, I don’t mind pineapple on pizza, especially when you funk it up with jalapenos or spam and pineapple. But here at The Good Son, this funky joint on Queen West, they’re kicking it up another notch — this is the Mauna Loa, bro-a!!!

OK, now let’s break it down. You’ve got these great big chunks of smoked pork cheek, some roasted pineapple, rapini and teeny-weeny pieces of scotch bonnet peppers, which really give this thing a decent kick. You may not be able to see ’em, but you can definitely feel the burn, bro!!!

Now, there aren’t a whole lotta brews to choose from here — and it’s mostly big names like Sol, Heineken and Guinness. But they do have Lagunitas IPA on tap, so I can’t really complain about that!

Who needs ham & pineapple when you can have spam & pineapple?

Not gonna lie, I kinda like pineapple on pizza — whether it’s bacon and pineapple or the classic Hawaiian: ham and pineapple. But the other day, I stopped in at Dovercourt Village Pizza, this funky little joint at Dundas and Bathurst, where they’re funking it up a notch by putting spam and pineapple on pizza!

They call this one “Thanks, Obama!” and it’s got BBQ spam, some tangy pineapple and a streak of BBQ sauce, with some added chili flakes from yours truly. Now, I’m not sure what they do to the spam, but it almost tastes more like bacon than something that comes in a can. And then that BBQ sauce gives it a little extra kick… Man, even if it spams my inbox from now till next November, I would still vote for this slice of pizza in 2020, bro!!!
