PATIO LIT EATS: The Caesar that eats like a meal!

Now, I’ve been wanting to check out Score on King for a while, but never got a chance to go until last night. This place is known for its legendary Caesars, and you know my motto’s always been go big or go home, so I’m going for the biggest, tallest, most overloaded of them all — The Checkmate Caesar:

Now, this bad boy is so big that they can only serve it to (at least) two people, so that’s why I brought a friend…and then I didn’t share. You’ve got a pulled pork sandwich on top of a cheeseburger on top of a Cornish game hen, with a pulled pork mac ‘n cheese hot dog, chicken wings, onion rings and a chocolate brownie sticking out the sides! And all this on top of a drink served in a Hoegaarden pint glass, which, even on its own would be the second-biggest Caesar I’ve ever had…but this one’s got a lot more toppings, bro!

pulled_pork_mac_cheese_dog (6)

So, we’re starting off with the pulled pork mac ‘n cheese hot dog, which was probably the most precariously perched piece of food. The dog itself was hot ‘n beefy, but both the mac and the pork were kinda cold, which was a little weird…

pulled_pork_sandwich (1)

Next up, we’ve got the pulled pork slider. Now, I don’t love pulled pork unless it’s really good, and this one was just OK. The coleslaw inside the sandwich and the pickle on top were a nice touch, though!

score_on_king_cheeseburger (6)

Now, this cheeseburger was pretty basic, but it was definitely above average. Patty was thick and hot, and there were just enough toppings to add support without stealing the show. I might try one of their other burgers next time I come here…if I don’t just go for The Caesar Grande, though!

score_on_king_chicken_wings (3)

These wings were what I like to call sports-bar spicy — they’ve got a decent kick, but not gonna melt your face off. At least by now I had taken enough food off the top that I could actually stick a straw in and drink some of the Caesar!

score_on_king_onion_ring (3)

Onion rings were pretty good, nice ‘n crunchy, and went well with the wings. If they were a little cold, that’s on me because I ate three whole sandwiches before I got to them!

Now, at this point, I had eaten a pretty decent amount of food. I mean, if I was at a Super Bowl party, I’d have probably stuffed this much down my piehole by the second quarter. But I still had the biggest, most intimidating part of this dish left to go — the full Cornish game hen:

Even though I left it for last, this chicken was still pretty tasty. Skin was deep-fried and crispy, and the bird was tender and juicy. It’s a good thing that it was so melt-in-your-mouth, cuz I could barely chew at this point…but you KNOW I still ate it all, bro!!!!

score_on_king_aftermath (4)

And of course, I still had room for dessert…

score_on_king_brownie (1)

Now, I already had a few bites of this chocolate brownie before I remembered to take a picture, but it was still pretty tasty. At this point, I had eaten enough food to curl up in a ball and go to sleep — but only after watching the Flames shut out the Dallas Stars, son!!!!

TORONTO’S TOP TAKEOUT: Hot dog for breakfast? Don’t mind if I do…

Y’know, if there’s one thing I’ve been missing the most during The Great Restaurant Shutdown of 2020, it’s brunch. I mean, I’ve ordered everything from mac ‘n cheese to Pekin duck to go, but I didn’t see any places doing brunch deliveries…not until I came across Ramona’s Kitchen, this funky little joint inside the Annex Food Hall, that’s serving up all three meals of the day — with a special brunch menu on weekends.

Now, we’re not just talking French toast and eggs benny, bro — this place is offering all kinds of funkaliciousness, like a green egg omelette, schnitzel benedict and this sausage party in Flavourtown, the Morning Frankfurter:

ramonas_morning_frankfurter (17)

Now, this has gotta be one of the most off-the-hook hot dogs I’ve ever had. You’ve got a thick, all-beef wiener, topped with scrambled eggs, holy guacamole, cheddar cheese slices, cherry tomatoes and some great big strips of bacon, all swimming in a spicy donkey sauce. This dog was super messy, but you know what I say — if it ain’t messy, it ain’t tasty!!!

ramonas_kitchen_fries (2)

Now, I don’t wanna sleep on the fries, either. These fresh-cut taters tasted just like something you’d get from a chip truck, and they were still hot and crispy when I started shoveling them down my piehole, cuz the streets were so quiet on Sunday morning that my order was barely 20 minutes from start to finish, making it the fastest delivery since this whole shutdown started!!!

Man, I know there are so many other funky joints offering takeout and delivery all over this city…but I might hafta order from here again, maybe even before restaurants reopen. That chicken schnitzel benny sounds soooo outta bounds, bro!!!!

Scarfing down on sausage at Taste of Toronto 2017!

So last year at Taste of Toronto, I kinda pigged out a bit. And speaking of pigging, it seemed like every place had some sorta hot dog at this year’s festival. But it wasn’t just pig we’re talking ’bout here–they’ve got duck, lamb and even wild boar, bro! And every time you put a tube of meat between two buns, you know I’m down with that, son!!!

grilled_duck_dog (3)

This grilled duck dog from my main man Mark McEwan is pretty outta bounds, bro! You’ve actually got duck three ways here–there’s the sausage itself, topped with foie gras mousse, and these crispy little bits of duck bacon. Dude, this is body by duck bacon! And then you’ve got a spicy Russian mustard, onion jam and some crisp spring onion, all on a poppy seed bun. Shut the back door!

chorizo&chicken (6)

Now, I wasn’t really ready to go right back into the ring with sausage after that delicious duck dish, but then I saw ’em cooking up the green chorizo on the grill at Bar Raval, and I was all over that like chili on cheese fries! Probably one of the most tasty, flavourful sausages I’ve even eaten–and it comes with piri piri chicken, to boot! That’s like a two-for-one after-school special in Flavourtown!!!!

okonomiyaki_fries (2)

Of course, it’s always French Fry Time in Flavourtown. And Nota Bene was serving these spuds up okonomiyaki style! You’ve got the kewpie mayo, the tempura bits and the nori flakes…but the fries kinda tasted like McDonald’s, though!!!

char_siu_bao (3)

But that ain’t even the only okonomiyaki game in town, bro! This char siu bao from my homies at Kanpai Snack Bar was completely off the hook! You’ve got all kindsa crunchiness from the purple slaw, spring onions, bacon bits and bonito flakes, and beneath all that, there’s some nice ‘n tender porky goodness. It’s like a Secret Garden of Funk in Flavourtown!!!

beef_brisket_tostada (2)

Now, you might be getting full at this point, but if there’s one thing I know, it’s that there’s always room for beef brisket. Barque Smokehouse is one of my top three BBQ joints in the city, and they’re taking brisket south of the border with this pulled brisket tostada! You’ve got brisket, salsa and avocado crema all on a crispy tortilla chip–pretty sure I could slam seven more of these!!!!

boar_corn_dog (5)

Now, you know I’ve had wild boar before, bro. I’ve even put it on poutine. But deep-fried wild boar on a stick!? Shut the back, front and side doors, son! Antler Kitchen and Bar won the Taste the World challenge in 2016, and it’s not hard to see why with flavours this baller!

indo_fried_chicken (2)

Now, when it comes to world flavours, I have had fried chicken from Korea, Taiwan and Kentucky, but this Indonesian-style ayam goreng was new to me. It’s kinda like chicken karaage, except with this spicy sauce on top, and they serve it with a side of war fries, which are kinda like a Tony Iommi guitar solo in Flavourtown! You’ve got some thick, crunchy spuds topped with pickled chilies, green onions, mayo and peanut sauce. These fries are TheBomb.id, bro!!!

What do you get when you cross Buffalo wings with a hot dog?

OK, so check it out. This one time, I was hanging out at Let’s Be Frank, this funky juke joint in Chinatown. I told a buddy to meet me there, but he actually went to Fancy Franks instead. But hey, it was an honest mistake—you can never have too many gourmet hot dog joints in one neighbourhood, is what I say.

Speaking of neighbourhoods, this well-dressed wiener is taking me straight down to Allentown. They call this one Frankie Goes to Buffalo, and I gotta say, it just screams “Relax” son!

buffalo_hot_dog (1)

OK, let’s break it down. You’ve got a lotta crunch from the panko-breaded, deep-fried wiener; a nice, buttery kick from the Buffalo sauce, balanced out by a creamy Blue cheese dressing—and some carrot sticks and celery, y’know, for that one serving of veggies. Man, I could go all Kobayashi on six or seven of these…I’d just need some extra napkins!
