Badass wild boar burger @ The Monk’s Kettle

Now, even though it’s in the name, we don’t eat burgers every day on Triple B. Just like Guy Fieri, if it’s funky, we’ll find it — there doesn’t have to be burgers or bacon involved. But that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy a good burger, even more than the next guy. And at The Monk’s Kettle, this funky little pub in Etobicoke, they’ve got a whole buncha real-deal burgers, bro!!!!

Not only are they serving up seven different burgers and sammies on the menu, they’ve also got The Divine Burger, a special burger that changes on a regular basis. And when we stopped by last weekend, their Divine Burger was utterly redonkulous. We’re talking wild boar patty, topped with brie and prosciutto. Shut the front, back and side doors!!!!!!!!

This burger is soooooo outta bounds, bro! You’ve got a nice, gamey chew from the boar, a little ooze factor from the brie, and the prosciutto adds a little kiss at the end. Plus there’s this spicy donkey sauce gushing out all over the place. I’d put that on a flip-flop!!!!!!!!!

And because you can never have too much prosciutto, we’re also slamming down an order of Saltimbocca Jalapeno Poppers, filled with white cheddar and wrapped in more prosciutto. I was expecting these bad boys to be battered and fried, but even without the crunchy coating, they are still pretty crispy — and surprisingly not spicy, since they removed all the seeds. If you put a couple of these on top of a burger, that would really take it to the next level, bro!!!!!!!!!

great_lakes_egg_nog_stout (5)

Now, this place might have some badass burgers, but they’re really known for their beers. They’ve got all kinds of craft beer from a buncha local breweries, including a few brews I’ve never seen before — like this Great Lakes white eggnog stout. Turns out they only had one left in the fridge, so it mighta been a shelf turd… but it was still pretty nice ‘n creamy.

blood_brothers_sweet_mango_heat (11)

Dude, Blood Brothers is one of my favourite local breweries, bro. I mean, they could make a mango beer, and I’d still drink it! Actually, that’s what I just did. This Paradise Lost Sweet Mango Heat, which they’ve got on tap, is heavy on the mangos, but not really spicy — at least not when you drink it with some jalapeno poppers. And at 6%, this ain’t no IC Light Mango, bro!!!!

third_moon_lone_tree_ipa (8)

But now we’re kicking up another half a notch with this Lone Tree IPA from Third Moon Brewing in Milton. I have never even heard of this brewery before, bro! But this is a nice hazy boy, coming in strong at an evil 6.6%. I would drink this any day… but maybe not all day.

monks_kettle_chocolate_cheesecake (1)

But even after all those burgers, prosciutto and beer back there, I’ve still got room for dessert. This Marble Chocolate Cheesecake is nice ‘n crunchy with a side of sour cherries and a whole lotta chocolate sauce going on. Can’t complain about that at all!!!

peche_mortel_coffee_stout (3)

And since the name of this blog ain’t Burgers, Bacon and Irish Coffee, we’re washing dessert down with a Peche Mortel imperial coffee stout, a collab between Godspeed and Dieu du Ciel. This is a really strong beer at 9.5%, but it really just tastes like coffee — don’t think I’d drink it for breakfast, bro…

Slammin’ a mac ‘n cheese meat loaf sammy @ Bar Hop Sessions

Craft beer is blowing up all over this city, bro! So when I heard that Bar Hop was opening a third location, right by my old stompin’ grounds at Pape and Danforth, you know I was all over that like foam on beer, bro! And they’ve definitely got some funky golden goodness on tap–like this beautiful brew, the Rabbit of Caerbannog White IPA:

rabbit_white_ipa (4)

Dude, I’m all over a beer named after a Monty Python sketch, bro! And this rabbit goes right to the throat with flavour. You’ve got the citrusy fruitiness of a witbier meets the hoppiness of an IPA. I would not say “Ni!” to another one of these!!!

barhop_stuffed_jalapenos (8)

But you know I’m not about to slam these beers on an empty stomach, bro! So we’re starting off with these stuffed jalapeno poppers, with smoked cheddar and mozza, topped with bacon jam. The first one did not have any heat to it, but the second and third packed enough of a kick that I had to order another beer.

sawdust_city_saison (3)

Now this one kicked the funkaliciousness up another notch. What we’ve got here is a There’s No Way of Knowing Saison from Sawdust City. This beer is brewed with lemon verbena and grains of paradise, which means it might actually be good for you. And it tastes pretty good, too!

mac_cheese_meatloaf_sandwich (6)

And finally, we get to the main event, Mr. Tuesday Night Special…a meat loaf sandwich with a deep-fried chunk of mac ‘n cheese on top. Dude, this is Comfort Food 2.0, bro! The meat loaf is hot and chewy, with some nice onion seasoning, you’ve got a bit of arugula for that one serving of veggies, and then the mac ‘n cheese block just hits you like a bomb baby, come and get it all!!!

Now, I don’t know if this will ever be added to the regular menu, but hey, it’s not like I need an excuse to go back… 😉

Tackling a 22 oz pork chop @ Hogtown Smoke!

So we’re hanging out at Hogtown Smoke, this funky BBQ joint that just opened up a new can of kickass in downtown Toronto. The original smokehouse was a little hole in the wall, but the new place is pretty massive, with a great layout, and plenty of big screens to watch Tom Brady matriculate the football. Man, I would go back here just to watch the game, even if the food wasn’t so righteously funkalicious!

But yeah, they feed you pretty good, too. Last time I was at Hogtown Smoke, I polished off a massive pile of Kitchen Sink Fries, and still had room for a beef rib. So you know I was about to dive head first into their new menu, bro!!!

jalapeno_poppers (1)

These jalapeno poppers were poppin’, son! They take a whole jalapeno pepper, stuff it with cheese, then wrap it in bacon. Dude, you could wrap a flip-flop in bacon, and it would still taste good!

burnt_ends (4)

But one does not simply enter Hogtown Smoke and order only one appetizer, so you know I shoved this Super Bowl of burnt ends straight down my piehole! But that’s still just a second breakfast in Flavourtown…

tomahawk_pork_chop (14)

Now, I’ve scarfed down a couple steaks that were even meatier (although I didn’t finish one of them), but this was probably the biggest piece of pork I’ve ever pounded. You’ve got 22 ounces of Heritage Berkshire pork, super tender and juicy, with roasted potatoes, greens and pink celery, and then a red-pepper puree. The veggies alone were enough to feed a vegan family, but you KNOW this was just another light snack in Downtown Flavourtown!!!!

(I will admit that I did NOT have room for dessert afterwards…)
