$33 freeky Greek feast @ Pan on the Danforth

Everybody in Toronto knows that the Danforth is the place to go if you want some real-deal Greek food. And I’m definitely no stranger to the area. Whether it’s the BBQ quail and Greek fries at Astoria, the four-pack of lamb chops at Mezes, or the bitter balls at Borrel…OK, so that last one’s Dutch, but my point is there is plenty of great grub in Greektown.

Now, I’ve heard that one of the best, most authentic Greek joints in this city is Pan on the Danforth, but I’d never been there before. It can be hard to get a table sometimes, cuz they’re packing ’em in for their Panlicious Dinner–three courses for 33 bucks, bro!!!

So, we’re starting off with some lightly breaded, deep-fried calamari, so hot you gotta wait a couple minutes before you pick ’em up. Lemme tell ya, there are few things I love more than deep-fried squid, and these squid are too legit to quit!

But you know that was just the first course in Flavourtown! We’re moving on to the braised lamb shank, which is my go-to at Jimmy the Greek…but this one’s, like, 10 times better! The melt-in-your-mouth meat falls off the bone and slides straight down my piehole, while the orzo pasta in a tomato broth is like risotto gone “Opa!” (Smashing plates not included.)

Now, I kinda hate to admit this, but I actually did NOT have room for dessert. So I had to get this piece of Greek ravani cake to go. The sweet semolina with syrup on top, some chopped almonds and blueberries still tasted good for breakfast the next day, though!!!

Alberta Lamb: It’s the other red meat!

Now, when you enter Alberta, there’s this great big sign that says Welcome to Beef Country…or at least there will be after Jason Kenney gets elected. Growing up in Calgary, it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll be eating steak, but one thing I’d never heard of before was Alberta lamb. I thought all lambs came from New Zealand, or something…

So, now we’re hanging out at Montecito, this funky upscale joint just a stage cigarette pass away from the Royal Alexandra, Scotiabank Theatre and the TIFF Bell Lightbox. This place is owned by Ivan Reitman, the man who brought you Stripes and Ghostbusters, so you know it’s gotta be good! And on the menu, they’re serving up Canadian culinary classics like Quebec Venison, Fogo Island Cod…and Alberta Lamb Sirloin.

Now, you KNOW I love lamb, bro, but this might be the greatest lamb dish in Flavourtown history! You’ve got these thick, tender slices of lamb steak, served medium rare, with lamb sausage, navy beans and chunks of bacon–dude, Chunks of Bacon was my nickname in culinary school! About the only thing that could make this better is if you added some wild mushrooms on the side… Oh, wait!!!

Now, you know that after slamming down a 36-dollar lamb dinner, this cowboy’s still got room for dessert. And this sweet treat is brought to you by the StayPuft Marshmallow Man himself:

Say hello to my little friend StayPuft Semifreddo. I’m pretty sure he had a small role in The Godfather, Part III. What you’ve got here is a chocolate ganache, with graham-cracker crumbs and a whole buncha marshmallow fluff on the side. Dude, this is body by marshmallow fluff, bro!!!!

Jimmy’s lamb dinner is my go-to Greek comfort food!

So, I was super-stoked when the Urban Eatery opened back in the day. You’ve got like, 27 different places to chow down, son! But my number one has gotta be Jimmy the Greek, and it’s all because of this roast lamb dinner:

Dude, I love lamb! It’s super-tender, falls off the bone, with a great chewy texture and some nice flavour from the Greek spices. But I would be remiss not to mention all you get with this dish—it’s a whole lotta food for $10.99!

So, you’ve got a yuuuge Greek salad, with onions, tomatoes and olives, a fistful of feta and a super-creamy dressing. Some yellow rice with peas and carrots, a whole buncha potaters, with a little tzatziki and hot sauce for that extra kick. Bro, my breath is gonna smell terrible for the next little bit, but I’m gonna be in a great mood all day, cuz I’ll be lambing my troubles away with this lamb chop!
