Seven Spanish Mushrooms @ Bar Isabel

Now, we’re not really big on tapas here on Triple B — gimme large plates over small plates any day, bro! But a couple years back, we checked out this funky little Spanish joint on College St called Bar Isabel, where I had a Spanish beer that was made with sea water. Oh, and some of those small plates weren’t too bad, either.

Anyhoo, this place is still in business, with a righteous craft beer list, and while most of the food I ordered last time isn’t even on the menu anymore, you still can’t go wrong with some brave potatoes, bros!

These patatas bravas are coming straight outta Barcelona, all smothered in donkey sauce! I think these were meant for sharing, but the last time I shared food, the other guy went hungry, so, y’know…

bar_isabel_grilled_mushrooms (3)

We’re doubling down in Flavourtown with some grilled mushrooms, bro! These kinda remind me of the shrooms we scarfed down at Beach Club… only these bad boys were ever tastier!!!

isabel_meat&cheese_plate (4)

What, after eating gluten-free last time, you didn’t think we would go vegan on ya, brah? This meat & cheese plate comes complete with Mountain Oak & Manchego cheese, alongside several slices of chorizo and salchichon. You could put that on a flip-flop — or some sourdough bread — and it would still taste good!!!

Oh, and that beer (served in a wine glass cuz they fancy) is an Orange Whisper from Small Pony Barrelworks. It’s sour ‘n tangy, but don’t let the name fool ya — no oranges were harmed in the making of this brewski…

Now, you KNOW we’re always down for dinner and a show — like this Basque cake with hot sherry cream that they pour at the table. Dude, Hot Sherry Cream was the name of my Foreigner cover band, bro!!!!

PATIO LIT EATS: Steaks on the beach @ Toronto Beach Club

Now, I’ve been down to Woodbine Beach on Canada Day a couple times, and the only thing they had to eat was Pizza Pizza. So when I heard that the Toronto Beach Club, this fancy new steak ‘n seafood joint, had opened up right on the beach — inside the same building as a Tim Hortons and a Booster Juice — you KNOW I had to check it out, bro! This place is serving up classics like lamb chops, a seafood tower, and a 40 oz porterhouse…along with some more Mediterranean fare, like this fried zucchini:

Now, you don’t usually see a lotta veggies on Triple B — but when they’re battered and fried, I could eat that all night long, Bro-nel Richie! I mean, I couldn’t even taste the zucchini underneath the crispy coating…which is just fine with me!

beach_club_avocado_labneh (7)

Next up, we’ve got this Middle Eastern take on avocado toast — labneh topped with avocado, served on a fresh ‘n hot pita that’s comes to the table all puffed up, so you know it’s gotta be good. Man, even with nothing on it, I could pound that pita bread all day…but you KNOW I gotta save room for steak, bro!!!

beach_club_t_bone_steak (4)

This 24 oz t-bone is 110 dollars on its own, with sides sold separately. (I think it’s meant for two people, but you know it’s just dinner for one in Flavourtown!) Meat is very charred on top, but still nice ‘n pink in the middle. And they even cut it all up for you — although I had to bite the last piece off the bone myself. And of course, you can’t have a steak dinner without mushrooms…the mushrooms are what makes it!!!!

beach_club_roasted_mushrooms (12)

Dude, these roasted mushrooms were so outta bounds, the lifeguard had to tell ’em to start swimming back to shore! Each shroom was as big as a head of broccoli, so you had to cut ’em up a couple times, but these were so tender and juicy that I could eat $110 worth of mushrooms alone! (That’s about 6 platefuls, in case you’re counting at home…)

beach_club_baked_alaska (1)

But you KNOW we’ve still got room for dessert, and we’re going with a steakhouse classic — Baked Alaska, son! They even set it on fire in front of you…but it didn’t burn baby burn as much as the one at BlueBlood. The flavour profile was also a bit different, with lemon ice cream instead of your regularly scheduled chocolate/strawberry programming. But to say dessert was the least favourite part of the meal would be like saying Axl Rose is my least favourite singer of AC/DC — they’ve still got me ringing Hell’s Bells, bro!!!!!!!!!

I’ll be chopping my troubles away with this veal chop!!!

Who needs a SlapChop when you can have a veal chop, bro? We’re hanging out at Blu Ristorante, this funky Italian joint on Yorkville, within stumbling distance of Bloor-Yonge Station. Now, this place is serving up linguine, martinis and bikinis, but when I saw the 14 ounce veal chop, I knew I was riding it right down to downtown Flavourtown!!!

blu_veal_chop (8)

Man, this veal was funktastic, cooked a perfect medium rare with a red beetroot risotto. Not the biggest steak I’ve ever eaten, but maybe the biggest piece of baby cow. I also paid extra for truffled roasted mushrooms, cuz dude, this is body by truffled roasted mushrooms!!!

blu_truffled_mushrooms (4)

Now, even after slaughtering that small animal, you KNOW I still had room for dessert, bro! And when I heard they were baking chocolate cake to order, I wasn’t gonna NOT order it…

blu_chocolate_cake (4)

OK, so this isn’t really a cake — it’s more like a five-bite brownie in Flavourtown. But you’ve still got that warm, gooey, chocolately centre, and it comes with a scoop of vanilla gelato — cuz you gotta have cake ‘n ice cream, bro! It’s not quite the hot chocolate cake at Morton’s, but I still believe in miracles!!!
