These deep-fried lamb balls are magically delicious!!!

Back at the beginning of First Lockdown, I ordered a whole Pekin duck from R&D…and ate it all myself. Dude, that duck was delicious! So now that they’re open for indoor dining again, we decided to stop by for another funky dish — how bout some deep-fried lamb balls, bro???

Now, I know what you’re thinking…but we’re NOT nibbling on nutsacks here. These lamb croquettes are stuffed with braised lamb shank, potatoes and onions, served in a sea of lamb curry with some donkey sauce on the side. Dude, you KNOW I love lamb bro, and these tender little flavour nuggets just melt in my mouth!!!

But now it’s time for the main event: chicken fried karaage style with a seaweed donkey sauce and a some lemon on the side. Man, this chicken was juicy, crispy…and coming in so hot I burned the back of my mouth, bro! And for 22 dollars, you get more than enough to share — unless you’re the type of person who eats a whole Pekin duck to themself. 😉

And since the name of this blog isn’t Chicken, Croquettes & Coca-Cola, we’re washing this down with a Fountain Green IPA from Furnace Room Brewery in downtown Georgetown. First time I’ve ever heard of this beer, or even this brewery, but it checks all the boxes than an IPA should, so it’s all good in the Flavourhood!!!!

TORONTO’S TOP TAKEOUT: Holy fuck, I just ate a whole duck!!!

Now, I’ve definitely had a few funky duck dishes in my day, but when I heard that R&D, this Asian fusion joint in downtown Chinatown, was delivering what they call The Best Duck in the City, you KNOW I had to check it out! Thing is, they don’t just give you a duck breast, or a duck leg — they’re serving up the whole thing, which means you need at least two takeout containers just for the duck alone:

Of course, they aren’t just giving you the bird — there’s also a whole pile of cucumbers, some leeks, a container of garlic hoisin sauce, and a whole buncha steamed baos to stuff ’em in. Put it together, and what do you got? Dippity duckity do, bro!!!

OK, now let’s break it down. This might actually be the best duck in the city — the bird is super-tender, melt-in-your-mouth goodness. Then you’ve got some crunch from the cukes, a little kick from the hoisin, and a nice puffy, doughy vessel to pack ’em all into. I could eat at least eight of these — wait, actually I did!!!

But we’re saving the best for last with a double duck leg takedown! Dude, this meat was so tender, it practically falls off the bone. So much richness, and not very fatty — I was pretty full when I finished all this, but not so much that I was slowing down. Still, even if it didn’t fill me up as much as my BBQ dinner for one, at $90, it was the most expensive takeout order I’ve ever made…

Now, while I’m scarfing down all that duck, I figured I could use a little goose — we’re talking Goose Island, son!

So I went for a Dubbel Whammy, this tasty Belgian Dubbel from the Goose Island Toronto Brewhouse. You’ve got a nice, rich, molasses flavour, but not too heavy at a shade under 7%. And Goose Island is doing free same-day delivery for orders over 20 dollars, which makes this another Delivery Double Down in Flavourtown!!!!!!!

SUMMERLICIOUS 2019: Legit beef brisket @ R&D

So, we’re hanging out at R&D, this modern Canadian Asian fusion joint right in the heart of downtown Chinatown. This place is serving up funky dishes like tom yum mussels, Korean rice cakes and black bean crispy tofu — but when I saw the Sichuan beef brisket, I knew I had to have it, just like an overweight basement broseph needs Szechuan sauce. But that only comes after I scarf down the biggest popcorn shrimp I’ve seen in my life:

Dude, these were like popcorn shrimp on steroids — and I would know, cuz I once chugged creatine with A-Rod, bro! You’ve got a sweet chili sambal glaze, and these “Hong Kong umami crumbs,” which are like mini little nuggets of flavour in Flavourtown!!!

But now it’s time for the main event. This Sichuan beef brisket was super-tender, fall-apart-on-your-fork goodness, on a bed of egg noodles with cabbage, mushrooms and a whole lotta sesame seeds. I’m sending these noods straight down my piehole, bro!!!

r&d_malaysian_sundae (4)

For dessert, we’ve got this ais kacang, a Malaysian-style sundae, with tapioca, strawberries, mango cream and not one, but two flavours of Haagen-Dazs ice cream.  Dude, who knew they had Haagen-Dazs in Malaysia???
