I’m real Fonda these tacos, bros!!!!

Dude, this is body by tacos! If you say tacos, I say “When and where, bro?” So we’re hanging out at Fonda Lola, this funky little joint on Queen West that’s literally right next to Prime Seafood Palace. And hey, this place is pretty small, so it might actually be easier to get a table at Matty Matheson’s meat mansion than at Fonda’s on a weekend — let’s just say you definitely need a reservation.

But when it comes to the menu, we’ve got no reservations… They’re serving up seven different kinds of tacos here, and they only come three (or four) to an order, which means I might need to eat 12 of them. (Wouldn’t be the first time, bro.)

But first, we’re putting the fun in queso fundido, this ooey, gooey cheese sauce that’s like Fondue Gone Loco in Flavourtown. Now, this ain’t my first fundido rodeo, and I gotta say, this one needed to be heated up a little longer — it wasn’t quite hot or melty enough. But did I still eat all of it? Yes way, Jose!!!!!

Now it’s time to kickstart this fiesta with some Baja fish tacos. Dude, this is like a Baja Blast to my tastebuds, bro! Fish is lightly breaded, not too heavy, with a crunchy cucumber and cabbage slaw, purple onions and sprouts on top — there’s like a whole garden in here!!!!!

Up next, it’s cochinita pibil, aka Mexican pulled pork. Pork is chewy, tangy, with just a bit of a kick from the axiote sauce — it’s like Axe Mouth Spray in Flavourtown!!!!

This shrimp taco was crunchy, juicy and more than a little messy — dude, there’s like four shrimp hidden in here, bro! Between the fish and the shrimp, I actually liked the shrimp more.

Their Top Sirloin was like a more typical Mexican street taco; steak, onions and cilantro, with a bit of salsa verde in there. Nothing wrong with that at all!

But even after crushing all those tacos, you KNOW we’ve still got room for dessert! We’re talking churro bites, these tasty deep-fried nuggets of goodness served with strawberries and cream, and sides of dulce de leche, berry compote and salted caramel for dipping. Dude, you could put that on a sombrero, and it would still taste good!!!!!!

4 different deep-fried tacos @ La Carnita

Dude, you KNOW I’d eat anything deep fried, bro! I mean, you could deep-fry a flip-flop, and it would still taste good!!! So we’re hanging out at La Carnita, this funky taco joint on John St, just a few steps from Hooters, where they’re putting not one, not two, not three, but four different fried things in tacos — so you KNOW I had to come check it out!!!

la_carnita_cod_taco (1)

So, we’re starting off with In Cod We Trust, their twisted take on a fish taco. You’ve got crispy cod, topped with pickled cabbage, cilantro, and Voltron sauce, which is like Donkey Sauce Gone Wild, bro!!!!

carnita_fried_chicken_taco (3)

Next up is El Pollo Frito, a fried chicken taco topped with onions, tomato and enough cabbage to choke a chicken… Sadly, the bird isn’t the star of the show here.

Now, we’ve got the Baja Shrimp taco, which has the right fried stuff to non-fried stuff ratio with just a bit of lettuce, pickled turnip and some garlic mayo, for that extra kick.

carnita_sweet_potato_taco (4)

But we’re saving the most funkalicious for last with this sweet potato. You’ve got a whole garden in here with deep-fried sweet potaters, topped with black beans, lettuce, corn and jalapenos, and just oozing with crema. This has gotta be the best vegan thing I ate all week, bro!!!!!!

You have a bunch of Good Hombres right here…and they’re making some tasty tacos!!!

So, we’re hanging out at Good Hombres, this funky little taco joint on Bathurst, just a kidney stone’s throw from Toronto Western Hospital. This place is actually attached to a funeral parlour, and it’s a good thing, too…cuz their tacos are to die for, bro!!!!

good_hombres_tacos (2)

Now, ordering less than three tacos is a felony in Flavourtown…so I’m starting off with six. From the top, you’ve got carne asada, some killer carnitas, legit lamb barbacoa, both kinds of seafood tacos — fish AND shrimp — and then this culinary secret weapon, taco alambre. But the party don’t stop there, son!!!!

good_hombres_tacos_round_2 (5)

For Round 2, we’re throwing down chorizo y papas, portobello mushrooms — this was the hottest taco of them all for some reason — and el pollo (loco) asado. I pretty much had one of everything on the menu…except tacos al pastor. They were all outta al pastor — ¡qué horror!

good_hombres_alambre (5)

Now, it’s hard to pick a favourite among so many great tacos, but for this hombre, it’s gotta be alambre. You’ve got beef, you’ve got bacon, bell peppers and melty cheese, topped with cilantro and smothered in chipotle — you could make this taco with a flip-flop, and it would still taste good!!!!

Slaying some shrimp tacos @ Wallace Gastropub

Now, I know what you’re thinking… What would a place with a name like Wallace possibly know about tacos, bro??? And hey, I hear ya. Not gonna lie, I wasn’t so sure myself. But after pulling some core mussels at the Wallace Gastropub last summer, I knew their seafood was pretty legit–so we’re heading back for Taco Wednesdays (yes, Wednesdays), where they’re serving up three fully loaded flour tortillas for just $10.95!!!!

wallace_shrimp_tacos (8)

Now, for that price, you could get chicken or fish, but a legit shrimp taco is something you definitely don’t see every day. And lemme tell ya, these babies bring the heat! You’ve got some mixed greens, cilantro, cheese and add-your-own guac, but man, it’s all about the shrimp, son! These big ‘n meaty sea creatures are served up in a sneaky spicy chipotle sauce that’ll make you order another beer or two. Good thing they’ve got some pretty decent craft beers on tap…

black_raspberry_thunder_IPA (10)

Speaking of things you don’t see every day, this Muskoka Black Raspberry Thunder IPA combines the tarty sweetness of raspberries with the slight hoppiness of a not-too-bitter pale ale. And at $7.50 a pint, you can probably drink enough of these that you’re totally taking the TTC home, bro!!!!

Tacos and spring rolls and ceviche… Oh Mai!

So, we’re hanging out at Mai Bistro, this funky little family joint in the West West End–we’re talkin’ bout Etobicoke, bro! Now this place takes Latin food, they take Asian food, they put the lime in the coconut and mix it all up! With so many of my favourite foods on their tapas menu, I almost don’t know where to start… Oh yeah, how bout with some curry lamb spring rolls?

lamb_curry_spring_rolls (6)

Dude, this dish is like a Bollywood Kung Fu double feature in Flavourtown! You’ve got the richness of the curry, wrapped up in a deep-fried wonton, and dipped in chili sauce??? Shut the back door!!!

mai_bistro_calamari (4)

Now, at this place, they’ve got both kinds of calamari: grilled AND fried! But why grill anything when you can deep-fry it, dude???

mai_bistro_shrimp_tacos (3)

And now, it’s totally time for tacos, bro! These shrimp tortillas are grilled with chipotle, and then they throw down some mango, avocado and pico de gallo… It’s a party in my piehole!!!

mai_bistro_ceviche (2)

Of course, you KNOW we’ve still got room for dessert–and we’re chowing down on some ceviche, son! Who needs chocolate cake when you’ve got shrimp and crab???

mai_bistro_karaage (6)

Now, up to this point we’ve had some Mexican, we’ve had Italian, an Indian/Chinese fusion and Peruvian. So why not end off with some Japanese fried chicken karaage? It’s around the world in 80 bites, bro–and it’s all right here, at Mai Bistro!!!
