Eating all the meats @ Campechano Taqueria

Happy Taco Tuesday, bro! We’re hanging out at Campechano Taqueria, this funky little joint right at the corner of Adelaide and Portland, where they’re serving up some real-deal Mexican meals. Now, this place is actually kinda smart — if you order four tacos, they bring ’em out one at a time, instead of all at once, so they don’t get cold.

And since they were all outta carnitas, I had to try every other meat on the menu. We’re talking lamb, we’re talking steak, chicken and chorizo… Right here, right now on Triple B!!!

campechano_barbacoa_taco (4)

Dude, this barbacoa taco is ba-ba-ba-ba-bad to the bone, bro! You’ve got braised lamb leg, topped with cilantro, chile adobo and some jalapeno salsa… Pretty sure I could slam 17 of these — but then I wouldn’t have room for chorizo y papas!

campechano_chorizo_papas (4)

And this chorizo’s off the chain, bro! You’ve got pork sausage, fingerling potatoes, onions, cilantro, salsa verde and crema…I’d put that on a flip-flop!!!

campechano_pollo_pastor (4)

And now for something completely different. You’ve heard of tacos al pastor? Well, it’s like that, except, instead of pork, it’s chicken. Not sure if they cook it on a spit, but you’ve got some nice chunks of el pollo loco, paired with pineapple, cilantro and two kinds of salsa. It’s kinda funky, but it’s pretty tasty!!!

campechano_costilla_taco (2)

Now, it’s time for the main event. This ribeye steak taco is nine bucks, which seems like a lot when you can get nueve de carnitas for that price at Latin World. But the flavours are totally on point — some of the best meat I’ve ever had in a taco, with avocado, cilantro and a spicy salsa macha. I had to pound a coupla brewskis to beat the heat, bro!!!

avling_vibrant_saison (2)

Now, speaking of brewskis… This joint has got Dos Equis on tap, but for 50 cents more, they’ll pour ya a pint of this Vibrant Saison from Avling Brewery. It’s light, refreshing, more tart than tangy…and totally soaks up some of that hot sauce!

campechano_tres_leches (6)

Of course, even after all that taco goodness, you KNOW I’ve still got room for dessert, bro! The dessert menu here is just one line, and you’re looking at it: tres leches de fresas, a strawberry sponge cake soaked in condensed milk. I’m about to moo-ve it on over straight down my piehole, son!!!!!

4 tacos chingados @ La Chingada

So we’re hanging out at La Chingada, this fucking Mexican joint on Dundas West. (If that offends you, don’t bother translating the restaurant’s name, bro!) Now, this place used to be Smoke Signals, one of the better Texas-style BBQ joints in the city, but now they’re taking it south of the border with some Mexican street food classics. Of course, Taco Tuesday is my favourite officially trademarked holiday, so when I heard this joint was serving up three-dollar tacos al pastor, solo los martes, then you know I had to come check it out!

chingada_taco_al_pastor (6)

Now, this Taco Tuesday is a pretty sweet deal, cuz all of their tacos are normally $6 or $6.50 — mucho dinero, hombrecito! It’s also pretty sweet, cuz they put a whole pile of pineapple in each taco, along with a buncha onions. These tacos were very, very messy — I needed extra napkins — but for three bucks a pop, I ain’t complainin’!

chingada_choriqueso (4)

Now, tacos al pastor weren’t the only thing I shoved down my boca. When I saw choriqueso on the menu, you know I had to have it, bro! You’ve got melted cheese, chorizo, green onion and some house picante, all in a corn tortilla — I could eat like seven of these…

chingada_chicharones (2)

But you know I had to save room for some chicha-atcha-rones, cabrones! This deep-fried, crispy pork skin comes with three side sauces — salsa verde, pica de gallo and guacamole… It’s a Flavourtown Triple Threat!!!

michelada_chingada (4)

Now, while I do always drink beer, I wasn’t about to wash this Mexican fiesta all down with Dos Equis. Instead, I went with a Michelada Chingada, which is sorta like a Mexican Caesar, but mixed with beer. Of course, they didn’t say what kinda beer they used–for all I know, it mighta been Dos Equis!!!

Pork tacos three ways @ El Sazon Mexicano

Dude, you KNOW that Taco Tuesday is always my favourite day of the week, bro! So, we’re hanging out at El Saz√≥n Mexicano, this funky little joint just east of the Italian part of St. Clair West. Now, I’d pretty much eat any kind of taco — you could make a taco out of a flip-flop, put it on a flip-flop, and it would still taste good! But when I heard they were serving up not one, not two, but three kinds of pork tacos…I pretty much had to try all of them!!!

el_sazon_chorizo_taco (4)

So, we’re starting off with chorizo. This meaty Mexican sausage was super greasy, but not too spicy. All of their tacos come the same way, topped with onions and cilantro, but I also added a little salsa verde to this one…

el_sazon_al_pastor (5)

Next up, we’ve got the Mexican radio star, Taco Al Pastor. This pork was nicely seasoned, super-tender…but maybe couldda used a slice of pineapple or two for that extra tangyness.

el_sazon_carnitas_taco (6)

Of course, we’re saving the best for last — las carnitas, cabron! This Mexican pulled pork had the perfect texture, with an extra squeeze of lime… Dude, this is body by carnitas!!!

el_sazon_choriqueso (3)

Now, because I didn’t get enough chorizo in my diet, I also went with an order of choriqueso. This dish is kinda like queso fundido, but less queso, more fun, bro! You pretty much get three large, cheesy chorizo tacos for just seven bucks here. Dude, all this food and a Mexican Coke was only 25 dollars after tax… That’s like 357 pesos, hermanos!!!

Cinco tacos locos @ Tacos El Asador

Dude, you know it’s miercoles, which can only mean one thing… Esta tiempo for some tacos, bro! So, we’re hanging out at Tacos El Asador, one of the OG Mexican joints in Toronto–right in the heart of Koreatown. Now, this place has got all kinds of Mexican food: tamales, burritos, tostadas, chicharones…but if you’re not slamming down at least a fistful of tacos here, then you’re definitely doing it wrong!

asador_chorizo_taco (2)

So, we’re kicking it off with the chorizo. This zesty Mexican sausage comes covered in traditional taco toppings like lettuce, tomato and pico de gallo. Ay caramba!

asador_fish_taco (1)

Next up, we’ve got the fish taco. Unlike most places, their fish isn’t breaded and deep-fried…but they totally smother it in mayo, though!

asador_carnitas_taco (2)

Now we’re moving on to the carnitas. Don’t let the veggies fool ya–there’s plenty of tasty cow face underneath!!!

asador_pastor_taco (4)

This hunka-funky taco al pastor don’t need no stinkin’ veggies–all we got here is a nice pineapple slice! (And I guess some onions…)

asador_goat_taco (3)

But you know we’re saving the funkiest of the funky bunch for last, Marky Wahl-bro! This is a birria taco, and no, that doesn’t mean it’s cooked in Corona. This goat taco is baaaad to the bone, bro!!!!

OK, so this place doesn’t have the most Instagrammable tacos–especially if you like pictures of meat. But did I mention that all this and a tallboy of Tecate was just 30 dolares? That’s like a five-taco discount in Flavourtown, hermanito!!!!!

12 TACOS OF CHRISTMAS: Tacos al pastor

11trujillo

For the 11th taco of Christmas, my Trujillo gave to me…

Tacos al pastor!

So, we’re hanging out at El Trompo, this real-deal Mexican taco joint in Kensington Market. This place is known for its authentic south of the border food, as well as its horribly outdated, Flash-based website. Now, the fish tacos are pretty legit, and the queso fundido is outta bounds bro, but the al pastor is where it’s at. They serve ’em up Dee Efe style with pineapple, coriander and onion, and some lime on the side. Five to an order will only cost ya 10 bucks, bro!!!
