Tater tots topped with bacon, cheese curds, maple syrup and gravy!? Shut the shack door!!!!!

So, yesterday we’re hanging out at Sugar Shack TO, this funky little maple syrup festival down on Sugar Beach. Now, you can bet yer last loonie they’re serving maple syrup on snow here, but I also found this food truck that’s funking things up a notch:

Over at the Get Your Own Taters truck, they call these Great Canadian Taters, and it’s like a culinary Canadian Heritage Moment in Flavourtown. These crispy spuds are smothered in gravy, with plenty of cheese curds and bacon to go around. You’ve also got some crunch from the green onions, and just enough maple syrup to give it a bit of sweetness, without being too strong. Now put that in yer canoe and paddle it!!!!

But even after all those taters back there, you KNOW we’ve still got room for dessert, bro! So when I saw a little stand selling these sandwich cookies shaped like a stack of flapjacks, with maple syrup on top, I knew they were headed straight down my piehole! The syrup is hard and crunchy, but it adds some sweetness to these shortbreads with vanilla in the middle. Now, if they had some chocolate pancake cookies, that right there would be next level!!!!

Of course, you can’t have a sugar shack without a little tire sur la neige! Only problem was that they were cranking these out so quickly that they didn’t freeze completely, and half the syrup ran off the popsicle sticks onto my hands. But you know what I say, if it ain’t messy, it ain’t tasty, bro!!!!

GRAND REOPENING: Tacos! Tacos! Tacos! @ Rabbit! Rabbit! Rabbit!

You KNOW this is body by tacos, bro! So when we found this funky new joint serving up Tex-Mex style tacos on King Street called Rabbit! Rabbit! Rabbit! we totally had to check it out. We’re talking fish tacos, we’re talking brisket…we’re even talking crispy cauliflower. OK, so maybe we might skip that one.

rabbit_fish_taco (8)

Now, this wasn’t the biggest or crunchiest fish taco I’ve ever caught, but it was still fairly flavourful, with some pico, cilantro and coleslaw, not to mention the chipotle crema oozing out all over the place… You could put that on a flip-flop, and it would still taste good!

rabbit_chicken_tinga (5)

Chicken tinga also had a nice little crunch from the radish and pickled onions, along with a little cotija cheese on top. This one also had a bit of a kick, but was not too spicy for this gringo… Let’s just say I chased it away with a couple pints of their house Rabbit! Cerveza.

rabbit_brisket_tacos (6)

Now, the smoked brisket tacos were probably the reason I came here. Dude, you definitely don’t see brisket tacos every day in Toronto, bro! They kinda buried the brisket in salsa verde and donkey sauce, but I think I found a way to kick things up a notch…

rabbit_brisket_tater_tots (4)

You KNOW I’m all about the meat ‘n potatoes, bro! So I ordered a side of tater tots, and then stuck a few of ’em on top. Man, the crunch from the tots reminded me of some of the breakfast tacos I had in Austin… Too bad the brisket was nothing compared to Franklin’s, though!

rabbit_tres_leches (10)

But even after slammin’ a fistful of tacos, you KNOW we’ve still got room for dessert. We’re talking tres leches, topped with toasted coconut and candied pineapple, for a little extra kick. Cake was nice ‘n moist, not too sweet, and there was plenty of pineapple to go around — you could put it on a pizza, and it would still taste good!!! 😛

PATIO LIT EATS: Cod fish empanadas & truffle tater tots!

Dude, if there’s one thing I like more than comfort food, it’s comfort food that kicks it up a notch. So we’re hanging out on the patio at Canteen, this funky O&B joint at the bottom of the TIFF Lightbox. And they’re all about the comfort food — Caesar salad, tacos, burgers, sliders and pizzas…but when I saw the truffle tater tots, you KNOW I gotta have my tots, bro!!!

truffle_tater_tots (4)

OK, so what makes these truffle tater tots is the truffle aioli dipping sauce — there’s a reason why these are eight bucks, and not 800! But the taters were nice ‘n crispy, and the sauce adds a bit of a kick…I can’t complain at all!

canteen_cod_empanada (3)

But you KNOW that order of tots wasn’t gonna tide me over, so we’re pairing it with a pair of Piri Piri cod empanadas, cabron! These fish pastries were super-flaky, coming in really hot out of the oven. The fish was pulled, and not very spicy — but still pretty tasty!!!

canteen_mac_n_cheese (2)

But the party is just getting started, son! Up next we’ve got mac ‘n cheese, with mushrooms, cured tomatoes and herb bread crumbs. There was supposed to be kale here, too, but friends don’t let friends ruin mac ‘n cheese with kale, bro! You’ve got some nice, big noodles, a creamy cheese sauce, and the mushrooms add a nice bite. I couldda maybe used a little more cheese on top, though…

maison_selby_wit (5)

And we’re washing it all down with a coupla Maison Selby Wit beers, brewed by Big Rock for another O&B joint…but they serve it on tap here, too. Nice, light and refreshing, but not too citrusy — I could slam at least 10 of these!!!

TORONTO’S TOP TAKEOUT: It’s like Steak ‘n Potatoes Gone Wild in Flavourtown!!!

Now, you know we love burgers and fries right here on Triple B — it’s even in the name, bro! But sometimes, I want something a little more elevated. We’re talking steak sandwich, and maybe some tater tots, but kick it up a notch, with bacon and cheese? Luckily, Knuckle Sandwich, this funky little joint on Coxwell, a flew blocks north of the Danforth, has got just what the good doctor ordered!!!!

steak_sandwich_loaded_tots (5)

Now, this order took over 15 minutes just to deliver…but it was definitely worth the wait! This steak sandwich was super-slow-mo scrumptious, son!!!

knuckle_steak_sandwich (4)

Now, by the time my delivery got here, the steak was a little more than medium, but the meat was still pretty tender. Topped with chimichurri, crispy onions and a garlic donkey sauce on a nice crusty roll — I was actually kinda full after just eating this half! But you KNOW I’ve always gots room for tots, bro!!!

knuckle_sandwich_loaded_tots (6)

These loaded potatoes totally kick it up a notch with green onions, cheddar cheese and ranch dressing, plus they’ve got these great big chunks of bacon — there’s no baby bacon bits here, bro! That’s like almost all the food groups in Flavourtown…all we’re missing is alcohol and gravy!!!!

The Mac Daddy of all wraps…

So, we’re hanging out at The Ballroom, this funky joint at John and Richmond. I don’t always hang out in this part of town, but when I heard they had free bowling on Sundays, I didn’t even hafta change my shirt, bro! And this place has got some pretty funky food, too, like this righteous wrap daddy, the Mac Wrap:

mac_n_cheese_wrap (4)

Dude, this thing’s so fully loaded, I don’t even know where to start! You’ve got some creamy mac ‘n cheesus, with melty mozzarella, slammed together in a tortilla with bacon AND fried chicken??? Shut the back door!!!!

ballroom_tater_tots (12)

Of course, you don’t scarf down such a delicious dish with a side salad…so I went straight into the Smothered Tots, son! These deep-fried potaters are covered in chili, cheese and sour cream–all part of a balanced breakfast in Flavourtown!
